  1. Section 1: pg. 1-47
The first section of my book was about a family constantly on the run. The Walls family has a whole different lifestyle then most Americans, and their lives are pretty corrupt. This family moves from state to state just running away from their various problems. The Walls family becomes very elusive and good at running from their problems. The family could never have a home, just places to live in for a short while. One thing that this family is used to is the unknown. They never know what to expect and just what’s around the corner. The Walls kids are pretty content with their warped reality they are forced to live with. Possibly the reason behind this is because they cannot comprehend any other lifestyle. The relationship between Jeannette and her father is very innocent. Jeannette’s father tries to be the hero and her savior in any possible way he could make himself out to be, when he knows he can’t. Rex Walls (Jeannette’s father) feels like he is living out his perfect fantasy life in Jeannette’s innocent mind, feeding her fairy tales and lies about his “heroic” lifestyle. Little Jeannette is probably confused with her father and she doesn’t know what to believe or not.
    2 Definition Words:
“Dad bellowed with a proud.” (15)
Bellowed- to emit a hollow, loud, animal cry, as a bull or cow.
“Dad was so sure a posse of federal investigators was on our trail that he smoked his unfiltered cigarettes from the wrong end.” (19)
Posse- a body or force armed with legal authority.

This part of the story is all about running from your problems. Sometimes people feel like they can't handle a situation or something going on, and they feel like they need to get away. I know I felt this way numerous times when I feel stressed out. I just take a short break and go for a walk. It is a way to calm down and “get away” from the world for a short while.
“I told Lori how lucky we were to be sleeping out under the sky like Indians. 'We could live like this forever,' I said. 'I think we're going to,' she said.” (18)
This quote is a good example of the lies Jeannette’s family was feeding to her and her siblings. Jeannette’s parents tried to make it seem like they were living a better life than they actually were. When Lori says “'I think we're going to,'” it told Jeannette that they might be sleeping on the ground for awhile. Jeannette might not like living as Indians for awhile.
“'Years from now, when the junk they got is broken and long forgotten,' Dad said, 'you'll still have your stars.” (41)
The family is only trying to look on the bright side to their poor life. Mr. and Mrs. Walls couldn't afford Christmas presents for their children so they gave them stars in the sky. Each kid picked one out and called it their own. The family sets a great example for others. Material things should never be that important to someone, family is absolutely more important, and this family gives a prime example.
Discussion questions: Why doesn't Mom ever want to leave Rex Walls?
What are Brian and Lori's point of views on this story?
Clarification question: I wasn't sure about how the Joshua tree meant so much to Mom, and what it meant to her.

section one of this book started off with the girl jeanette, who was cooking hot dogs and caught her dress on fire. After this she was taken out of the hospital before it was safe dor her to do so, and her family moved out of town. They began to drive, nearly across the country and were living temporarily in rugged homes in beat down mining towns. Her father is an alcaholic who is very smart but believes in not domesticating children, or anyone. her mother, a free spirited woman who is an artist and one who loves nature and lives a care free life.

snide- strong, coarse remark towards another
vulgar- characterized by ignorance of or lack of breeding or taste.

i relate to this character because when she was in the hospital, she was treated very well and catered to and taken care of. I was in the hospital with pnemonia and while I was there, I was treated very well and given anything I wanted.

Before she was in the hospital, she had never had chewing gum, why?

As her and her family were driving across the country, her father threw the cat out of the car, for what reason?

Why did her father take her out of the hospital before it was safe for her to be taken out?

  3. Bennett- Realistically, I think her father took her out of the hospital because he didn't have enough money to pay for the hospital bill. But he tried to play it off that he was "saving her" from the hospital workers.

    discussion question answers
1- Mom would not leave rex her father because she is afraid of what hemight do to her if she did. he is a very controlling and intimidating person, as well as cunning, i think that she doesnt leave because she believes he would find her.

2- Brians point of view on this story is definately from the younger sibling's. he definately feels dominated and struggles with the things he does. As a boy he is definately told to suck things up more and be a man about it rather that being a child and being allowed to cry.
lori's point of view is definately different, literally because she has very bad sight. also she is brilliant and i think she sees the world from a different and more intellectual perspective.
    clarification:
1- The joshua tree meaant so much to mom because she appreciated it's natural beauty, how it had lived for so long and remains strong in such a harsh environment. She understands the depth of the tree's history.
