  1. This article was very interesting to me because it gave the reality of technology today. Everyone with a cellphone becomes attached to it; they almost never put it down. The thought of being without a phone or computer or technology in general is overwhelming to those of us who basically grew up with it. Jenna says, “One side effect of living an always-on digital life is the tension, along with the thrill, that can arise from being able to peep into people’s worlds at any moment and comparing their lives with yours.” Technology actually gives people more stress and tension, especially when they’re deprived for some time. I believe that to go a time period without a cellphone is very refreshing, and it makes being social easier and more fun.

  2. This article really made me realize how much most of the population is addicted to technology. Walking through the halls of school you'll hear "did you see what he/she put on twitter?" people are constantly checking to see what other people are doing. In the article the author says "mostly, however, I wanted to make sure that there wasn't some barbecue or summer music festival that we should be heading to instead" I'm sure these thoughts go through a lot of peoples' minds every day because of technology. Agreeing with what Rebecca said technology does cause stress and tension and it would be nice if people could just put everything down for a day, but I do not think that will ever happen.

  3. I find this article very shocking and it made me realize how much people are dependent on technology. Everyone I know has a phone, ipod, and computer. I think this is because these items are so cheap for most people they become necessaties. I've seen someone break their phone just to get a new one and back in the day 50 years ago people didn't have what we have today. I think technology is cool, but the way we treat our old items is usually piss poor espically when we get a newer version of that item.

  4. I think that the issue in the article is a major one as not even I can go for points without my phone and eventually go into social media withdrawal when I can’t update my facebook status or check my email. It’s a growing problem that is becoming almost as addicting as something like smoking, you always have to check what your friends are doing, budding into their lives, without them even knowing that you see everything that they do. This causes much more gossip and talk about school, like if somebody posted that they just got a date with the most popular girl in school and the girl didn’t want everybody to know, it would be all over school the next day. Agreeing with Rebecca also about how the social media and cell phones cause more stress, they really do. You always need to check to see your facebook, your instagram, your twitter, etc., that you end up missing out on fun things because you are always checking your social media. It should be treated as a addiction because it is, you never stop, you gain more stress, and, well, as it should be repeated again, You Never Stop Checking.

  5. As stated above by Quinn, I completely agree that our world is completely reliable on social media to function. From my personal experience, everything that is planned in my life is stored in my phone or I am tweeting about it. In the story it says,"My revelation — relearning the beauty of living in the moment, devoid of any digital link — may seem silly to people who are less attached to their devices. But for many people, smartphones and social networks have become lifelines." This quote stood out to me because I really wonder what life would be without my iphone. How would I wake up in the morning? How would I share my memories with others? I feel like if I went without a phone for a while, I could learn to appreciate the things happening in the moment and not what is happening in other places that could potentually be "better."

  6. Reading this article made me think about how much everyone uses technology. Using technology has become such a normal thing I haven't even noticed how much everyone relies on it. Now thinking about it I notice that everyone is always on a phone, iPod, or computer. Everyone is checking updates, reading messages or sending emails. We have become so attatched to the technology, it's hard to be without it. I know for me when I don't have my phone I don't even know how to function. My life is on my phone, it's hard to imagine being without it. I'm always on twitter and intagram looking to see what other people are doing and when Im not doing that I'm thinking about it. I would definitely say that phones are like an addiction. People have become so obsessed with what everyone else is doing and showing off what they're doing to other people we've forgot how to really enjoy ourselves without having a phone glued to our hand. In the article the author says "one side effect of living an always-on digital life Is the tension, along with the thril that can arise from being able to peep into people's worlds at any moment And comparing their lives with yours." the author is completely right. For some strange reason there is some kind of "thrill" or enjoyment that people get when they are looking at other peoples lives and comparing. I think that it's what keeps us addicted. In my opinion I wish that we didn't have phones and social networking sites. Because although I'm completely addicted to my phone and sites I think being without all those distractions would be really nice.

  7. This article really interested me because of all the different perspectives on what technology does to us. I completely agree with everything said in the article because being glued to a phone the majority of the time takes a person away from enjoying the little things in life; an example being laying by the pool like it says in the introduction of the article. In the article, Joshua Gross says, "...he thinks that as a modern society, we are “overcommunicated.”" I really agree with what he is saying because nowadays the majority of the population has some kind of smartphone; whether it's an IPhone, Android, or Blackberry, most of us can all be connected to the internet 24/7. I know for me, twitter and instagram are such distractions but I can never keep myself from scrolling through each of those apps multiple times each day. It's not only an addiction, but I also think it's a habit most of us got ourselves into. We're all used to seeing what everyone's up to and it's interesting to see what's going on in everyone else's lives. But sometimes it's nice to just put your phone away and relax and enjoy doing something fun with friends without having the distraction of texting, twitter, instagram, etc. I also agree with what Jackie said above; how people have become obsessed with what everyone else is doing and showing off their own lives to others. I think this is completely true because that's exactly what everyone's thinking when they post pictures and tweets. It's so crazy to think about things like this because for many people, it would be a struggle to be without a phone for just one day. Phone's have added so many positive things to communication in the past decade, but is it too much?

  8. The girl that wrote this article seriously needs to get out more. She acts as if all people are extremely addicted to technology. Personally I don't have an iphone and i don't even have internet on my phone, so i am not constantly connected to social media. The author of this article says that she is always curious of what other people are doing. Personally I really don't care. I think most of the things that people post are stupid; like I don't care if you are "Taking a shower :)" or "Eating Pizza." I also think people shouldn't want everything they do to be posted online.

  9. I really like the concept of “JOMO”- the joy of missing out-coined by Anil Dash. Most often, there will be “friends” and family probably doing something really cool and sharing that “coolness” with the world, but we have a choice in how we respond. I do hope that over time, we will develop healthy habits and self-control over technology. Hoffman refers to these habits as a “screen diet.” I think it must be really difficult for young people to find “joy in a life that is less connected.” I give you all a lot of credit because as a teenager, I would have had a difficult time regulating my time with social media. I am curious about your reaction to Wortham’s revelation that we should “relearn the beauty of living in the moment, devoid of any digital link.”

  10. This article really got me thinking about how much i use my phone, ipod, and computer. In today's society everyone is dependant on technology, and i can be harmful to your self esteem, as well as your brain. I use twitter and facebook, like most people do, however i do not post every detail of my life; only the important things. In the text, Mrs. Dembling said, " It’s crucial, she said, to remember that most people tend to post about the juiciest bits of their lives — the lavish vacations, the clambakes and the parties." I feel like for some people, this is completely true. (like me)On the other hand, there are those people, and we all know who they are..., that post constantly about unnecessary things. For our generation we have grown up around technology, therefore we are used to checking the computer or our phones to see what everyone is up to. Personally, i think that its good to disconnect for a little while from technology. Its rude when your trying to have a conversation with someone and they are just on their phone. We just have to remember that its okay to be without technology for some time.

  11. This article is very true. People are always looking at their phone checking text messages, twitter, Facebook, and other social networking websites, like it says, "I longed to ... heading to instead." I thought that this article was very true because most of the time that I do post things it is things that I am doing with my friends and having fun. After reading this I realized that it may hurt other people that are reading it and wishing that they were there with my friends and me.Phones are like a third hand to many people, including myself, we are always on them talking to our friends and posting things for everyone to see on social networking sites.
