Today you will begin by reading through your classmates comments from Wednesday's "Getting Started with Laptops" blog topic. Our goal will be to generate a list of guidelines that will help make our use of laptops a rewarding experience. Please open up a MS Word file and type notes for the following statements below as you read through the comments. You have approximately 15 minutes to complete this task. We will then share this information in a class discussion.
1. I really liked the comment(s) from_________________because... (Note at least two)
2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three)
1. I felt that the comments from Emily from period five and Sergei from period three were most helpful because they offered both sides of the argument in an informed manner. Emily felt that the laptops were a valuble and resourceful learning tool and a good way to spend budget money, while Sergei thought the money would be better spent elsewhere.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
a. Obviously, we should treat the laptops with a lot of care and make an effort to keep them in their best condition.
b. We shouldn't visit websites that we aren't instructed to visit.
c. We should respect our priviledge to use these laptops as learning tools, and not recreational tools.
I really liked the comment from Emily period 5 because she said that, "We don’t need to go to computer labs anymore, and we don’t have to worry abut there not being enough computers for everyone." having the laptops in class saves us the extra ten to sometimes twenty minutes it takes us to get to a computer lab as a whole class, try and find someone who has the key to that lab, log on, switch computers for ones that aren’t broken, etc. I also really liked the comment from Skyler period 8 who said, “I think the school in Liverpool didn’t do a enough job of setting up a fire wall. If a 10th grade student can bypass a fire wall its obviously done not up to standard.” The laptops here at BHS wouldn’t be much of a distraction for us because of how hard it is to get through the firewall to get the websites we really want, like facebook or myspace. I think the school at Liverpool needs a better firewall, like Skyler said, or needs a better policy on not going to restricted sites if so many people are going to those sites and are being able to get though.
ReplyDeleteThe following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
• The laptop should stay in the classroom. People shouldn’t be allowed to sign them out and take them home or take them to other places in the school. That’s why we have computer labs, and that’s why almost all of us have at least one computer at home.
• The laptops should be used for typing an essay and doing research, but should not be used for taking tests and typing essays that are on a test in class.
• Don’t damage the laptops on purpose, and don’t go to any sites you know you’re not supposed to be at. If someone does something like that, they should get the laptop taken away from them.
1. I really liked the comments from Riley in period seven and from Corey in period seven. I liked Riley’s post, “I think that students should have laptops to use during class time. However, I don't believe that they should be taken out of the class and used during the whole day.” I believe that this is a logical statement because obviously if the school lets the student take the laptop out of class, they would use the laptop for inappropirate reasons. I agree with Corey’s statement,” There are not enough WORKING computers in our computer labs here at school, and I think it is a great opportunity for us to use the laptops in English class.” I like this statement because laptops don’t need to be setup in a computer lab at school and they can just be used conviniently in the classroom.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines that we should have in our classroom are:
1. Handle laptops with caution by carrying in a proper manner with two hands, don’t eat or drink around them, don’t change any main settings etc. If we follow these rules the laptops would stay in better condition and last longer with less repairs.
2. Don’t visit any websites that aren’t school based unless further notice from a teacher.
3. No taking laptops outside the classroom for any reason whatsoever. If you need t use a computer you need to go to the school computer lab, or town library if you don’t have a computer.

Period 1
I really liked the comment from Heather in period 7 because laptops are more efficient for doing research and writing papers in class. They do have more updated information then certain text books that have been used for years and no new information has been added cause it can’t you would have to buy all new books. The laptops should only be used when the whole class is participating in using them and not whenever kids want to use them unless it’s for work for the class.
ReplyDeleteAlso I really liked Skyler said that the school in Liverpool didn’t do a good job on security on the laptops, especially if a 10th grader can bypass the system. If Liverpool maybe took more time to set things up and get a great security system then I don’t think this would have been a big issue. Laptops are great so the schools and the future as we are now coming more into an age of technology. Students should be able to have access to that and not b punished for something other students did, whether it be break the laptops or by passing the system. If student do disrespect them then they should be taken away.
Part of our laptop etiquette policy in F14 should be that
1 Students should take care of there laptops and not let anyone do anything to it whether it’s harmless or not.
2 If a students use their personal laptop while others aren’t then they should be respectful of the others working.
3 When not doing what they should be students should be taken off for that class and be watched during the next use of them.
~Andrew, period 1
I really liked the comment(s) from Catherine period 1 because she thought classrooms shouldn’t rely on the new laptops as the new technology anyway.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the comment(s) from Alexa period 7 because she said just because there are a couple faults in this technology doesn’t mean that we should not use it computers in the sense of technology are the new age.
The following guidelines should become a part of our laptop policy because they make some great points. It is some what their fault for this because the did not set up the best firewalls if 10th graders can get through them. Also they should be kept in class because the kids can learn on the laptops and be doing their own work and taking their own notes but at the same time if anyone has a problem they can ask their teacher at any time if necessary. The teachers should be more protective over their sites that they want the kids to go on but at the same time if a kid is on the wrong site he will be caught most of the time anyway for doing it. We should just be more careful when we are using the laptops and pay attention better. The more we use the laptops the more we will improve on our learning because this is what we are used to learning on.
Jim Period 1
I think i agree with skyler's comment and kenny's. i agree with skyler when he said that the school in liverpool did not do a good job wth their firewall. especially if kids can still get passed it. and i think he's right when he says the laptops are a substitution just for the teachers so they dont need to do their teaching. i really dont think that it would be a good idea if all schools lost laptops just because of what happened at that school. and with kenny's comments, i agree with him when he said that kids are just always going to abuse their privlegs of using the laptops in school. also when kenny says "if students can use these laptops to cheat and still not improve their grades it shows how laptops are just making us lazyer." that's also true. it makes us even more lazy and keeps us from actually doing the work that we're really suppose to be doing. also, kenny said that sing the laptops will lower our writing skills. i agree with him on that one too.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with “Angels” comment reguarding the use of laptops in classrooms because she pointed out many true points and used quotes from the text to further prove her thoughts. She pointed out that students do things online that they shouldn’t do in general, but by having a laptop in school, faculty “are simply making this process more accessible at their fingertips.” She did an excellent job of persuading the reader.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with “Bridgets” comment about the many cons of having laptops in school because she pointed out that if the grades improved at all, it was probably due to cheating through the laptops. This made me think. If there was no increase and they potentially could have been cheating… there might actually be a decrease because cheating often boosts grades. So it caused them to boost their grades from poor to satisfactory.
-Rachel
I do agree with Abby K from period 7 because of the way she has brought up the fact that here at BHS n ot every class has the privlidge to use these laptops, so everyone that gets the responsiblity and privledge to should respect the laptops.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Coral from period 5 because she brought up that adults did generalize, i do not believe every student in that school abused that priveldge, and they teachers shoould not be taking it out on every student, the teachers should be monotering what there children are doing on there laptops instead of assuming the children will follow the rules.
I really liked the comment from Jessica. She made many good points which I can relate to. “I mean kids are in school way to long, the laptops give them something that they enjoy doing.” I totally agree, they will be having a good time while their doing work. Jessica also makes a good point when she states that the kids should only use the laptops when needed, so not to cause a problem.
ReplyDelete-kelsey per7 =)
1. I really liked the comment by Erin period 5 because she said that the laptops saves time then going to a computer lab. Also she said that they give us freedom. I totally agree with her. I also agree with julie period 1 because she stated how shocked she was that those kids were taking the computers for granted. She also said that the computers “cannot only make you better at computers, but also make you a better student.” I also totally agree wit her with this. Lastly I really liked amanda period 7 because she said that the computers are better sorces on a compter, which is totally ture.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
a. first we should treat the computers with respect. Do you vandelize them
b. They should be used to write papers and do research
c. No visiting websites what are not school realted
kristin peroid 7
1. I felt that Jim period 1 was completely and utterly wrong in his comment, "We dont have to use them but most school chose to because it is a new thing and they think kids will use them and be more into it rather then reading a book because its new and exciting." They are helpful and should be used for good and not evil. I agree with Emily because she said that they were a valuable recource and a good way to spend the school budget.
ReplyDelete2. More restrictions on laptops
3. Treat lapops with more respect
4. Teachers should circle rooms cheking laptops screen
Riley
I dissagree with the comment by Kenny in period 1. Ithink the kids should use the laptops because i dont think the kids would really have a chance to abuse them if they are only using them in class, and a teacher is alway looking over what there doing.
ReplyDeleteAlso I agree with Riley in period seven when he said that the laptops should only be used in clas and shouldnt be signed out. That was something i would have put in my original comment that i left out.
1. I liked the comments from James and Emily, both from period five. Emily mentioned that we don’t have to go to the computer labs anymore, when we have the laptops. She also talked about the laptops being helpful when we research and write papers. I agree with everything that she said. I liked James’s comments as well. He said that the laptops are a privilege, which is true. Students that use the laptops inappropriately should get them taken away, but students who use them appropriately should get to keep using them.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
a. The laptops should be used for researching school related articles, projects and typing papers.
b. When the laptops are in use, our teacher should closely monitor our usage.
c. The laptops should stay in our English classroom, and should not leave the area.
Melissa- period 7
1) I liked what Gio had to say about the school using lap tops. He said that since students are responsible for one specific laptop, they will probably be more careful knowing that you will be charged a lot of money if you damage it. He also stated that having laptops in your own class room makes every thing a lot easier. There is no need to waste all your time walking over to a computer lab.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the comments from Gio and Carter because they were VERY LONG and informative. In all seriousness, they were helpful responses to the very important question (of laptops being in classes). Their responses contributed to what my "guidelines" are.
ReplyDeleteSuggested Rules for Laptop Use:
1. Do exactly as your teacher instructs while using the laptops, especially regarding the INTERNET
2. Be careful when handling the laptops- they are very expensive and somewhat fragile pieces of equipment.
3. Do not bring the laptops outside of the classroom! This is only a distraction to other students who are trying to learn. Also, the laptops can be easily damaged outside of class.
Corey, Period 7
I really liked the coment from Aelxa because it is very true. She said “We are living in a new technology age where almost every task is performed with a computer.” That stament is so true because as the years go by more and more things are becoming possible on the computer. Like when she said that mnay people do not have time to flip trhough a dictionary, it is ture because when ever I need to look up a word I go online. I also agree with corey to. That is because he was very true when eh said “There are not enough WORKING computers in our computer labs here at school”. It is very true because half of the computers are always broking. And if they are replaced with laptops I think kids would try to take better care of them.
ReplyDelete1. The kids should use them the right way and treat them whith respect. If they break them or go on a site they are not aload to I think that they should have the privledge of using them for a while.
2. When the the teachers are talking the laptops should be closed.
3. Should only use them in one class a day.
-Jessica per.7
I agree with Chris in period five and James in period five because they both say similar things about how everyone shouldn’t be punished because one or a few people did stuff they shouldn’t have been doing and both of them gave helpful information and ideas.

I really liked the comment from anonyminous (comment #67 I think) because they made some great points like “Chances are kids are just going to continue to abuse thier privelages” and “they don't need to be loaned out to students 24/7.”. It’s true, not all students but there are definitely a few teenagers who would break computers for the fun of it and just take as much as they can. He/she also said “If students can use these laptops to cheat and sill not improve thier grades it shows how laptops are just making us lazier. Students who are attached laptop will lose thier writing skills and test scores will be affected.” Which is totally valid but I’m starting to wonder if he/she is one of the students he/she talks about because they took the easy way out and didn’t put this on a word document first so the spelling is poor and he/she forgot to include his/she name.
ReplyDeleteI don’t really like the comment from Joe class 3. He says “I think that the kids should not use the computers to look up bad things on the computer.” Now, I completely agree with this statement but lets face it, its not that most kids look up bad things like porn but almost all of them get distracted on the computer. I mean would you rather listen to your teacher lecture about something you could careless for in a monotonous tone or chat on aim which your friends in other classes, the answer is pretty clear. Also, I’d just like to say that dropping a computer isn’t the only way to break a computer; there are such things as viruses. Overall he makes good points but I feel like he could have taker it deeper.
I’d like to ask one question that I hadn’t thought about before, how long will the laptops last and how will the thousands of them be disposed off when they can’t be fixed any longer because having to dispose of that many computers every several years cannot be good for the environment, at least we can grow more trees.
The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. When getting computers out of cart only several people should be up at a time, no crowding to prevent dropping computers.
2. don’t do what you shouldn’t be doing.
3. treat computers with respect and care.
1.
ReplyDeleteI really like the comments from Emily period 5 because she made a very good point about the computer labs. The computers there are really slow and sometimes they don't even work or are missing parts to them. Also I liked the comment she made about using labtops to get ready for college because in college we will be using laptops all the time.
I really liked the commment from Madeline period 7 because she said that computers cannot make students smarter, only the students can. I agree with this 100 percent. We expect way too much from technology and we think that it's the solution to every problem. I think we should rely more on other sources then just computers.
2.
1) Do not use the laptops when the teacher is talking or giving out directions.
2) Use the laptops for school purposes unless the teacher states otherwise.
3) When you are done using the laptops, hook them up to their charger so the people after you can use it.
Michael A.
Period 8
I think that Emily from period 5 made a good point when she said that since we have the laptops computer lab space for everyone isn’t an issue anymore. In the computer labs there are a good amount of computer but half of them barely work. With the many computers in the computer lab not working it makes it unfair when a teacher brings her whole class down and only half can log on and finish the assignment. Also, if a student doesn’t have computer access at home, the students should not have it held against them.
ReplyDeleteI think that Alice from period 7 had a good point about how the teacher should check laptops every so often just to make sure their students are doing what there supposed to do. Most students will end up on different websites and get off task from the class assignment. The students should face their laptop screens towards the teacher so that she can monitor what websites they are on.
1Use the laptop that was assigned to you.
2.Do not take laptops outside of the classroom.
3.Treat the laptops as if they were your own.
As an extremely biased and opinionated 'blogger', I thoroughly enjoyed reading Sergei of period three's comment. It was interesting to me how he could do such a great job of persuading the reader one way, and then being able to 'relax', so to speak, and state "don't get me wrong, I don't think we should ban computers all together; I still support having computer rooms in which the class goes for a period of time". Not only do I whole-heartedly agree with what he had to say, but I also really admire his ability to conclude his argument in this way, the reason being that I am so caught up in trying to persuade the reader, that I simply forget to mention that I do not ban the idea of computers completely, I just think that their use should be limited.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I disagreed with the side she was arguing for, Heather of period seven brought up a few very good points that didn't even cross my mind, such as "using the internet is a much faster and more efficient way than researching in an old, out-dated book". But, do we really need to spend all that money so that we can simply "speed things up"? Because to me, that seems lazy, especially when the schools can buy updated encyclopedias. In this way, you are still getting correct information, but you are also not relying fully on the computer. She also sated that "typing up papers on the laptops is a great idea because the papers are neat and readable, and they are error-free because of spell check." Again, this country is becoming a bit too lazy.
As for the guidelines that should become part of the Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14, I suggest a few things. Since the money was already spent, I feel strongly that we should use them to the best of our adavantage and simply put the money to good use. Notice, I said 'to the best of our advantage', which means things such as only using them for research and typing up papers, not for downloading music, games, etc., and it means no damaging or harming the equipment in any way shape or form.
The laptops should be used as a secondary source for help with research, the primary sources being books and other people, and not as a distraction from class.
Lastly, I feel as though the time should be limited on them, so that our brains don't get too fried.
1. I really enjoyed reading the comments from Emily from period five as they explained how computers are much quicker and faster than using books or other sorts of materials for research or writing essays. I especially liked it how she explained how some kids might visit other websites that they are not supposed to, but those students should not ruin the opportunity to learn for others.
ReplyDeleteI also really like the comments from Angel Period 5. Even though her opinion is very much different from Emily's, her thoughts are well said. I throughly agreed when she stated how laptops would just develop student's dependability to technology and make students become lazier.
2.The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
-Laptops should not be used consistently, and for unnecessary work as well. When this happens, people rely on technology too much, and are more susceptible to replicating another's work
-Students should never go to any other websites than the ones Mrs. Baker gives us.
-Lastly, treat the laptops with utmost care, as they are very expensive, I imagine, and try to keep them in the best condition possible.
1. The comments from Gio in Period 3 and Corey in Period 7 both contributed good arguments to this debate. Gio says that in the case with the Liverpool school system's laptop usage, the students had them at all times, and therefore monitoring their activities was limited. This allowed students to go on the internet or just simply not follow the lesson and do whatever they wanted. I agree with this statement and believe that by containing the laptops inside the classroom, students are less tempted to misuse them. This will prevent students from vandalizing the laptops and ensures their condition to be regulated properly. Corey said that the laptop teaching method can be classified as a trial and error system. One year, the laptops could be a great success, while the next they might turn out to be a failure. Despite the odds, the introduction of laptops is a great idea and incorporates technology into our daily lessons. We will have to wait and see how this experiment unfolds. As for my opinion, I believe that proper regulation by the teachers and school will enable this idea to be well used.
ReplyDeleteThe following guidelines should be implemented in our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. The laptops must be handled with the utmost care at all times. The laptops should not be damaged or vandalized in any way. If any student fails to comply with this rule, they are at the discretion of the teacher.
2. The laptops will remain in the classroom at all times. Students should not be allowed to take them home for any reason. At the end of the lesson, the laptops must return to the laptop cart. There are no exceptions to this rule.
3. Follow the directions of the teacher or adult in charge of the class. Do not open any programs without instruction from the teacher. Do not install or download any foreign programs to the laptop without permission. Any student caught downloading or using unauthorized software will be at the discretion of the teacher.
Carter
Period 7
Notes:
ReplyDelete• Students being responsible for having the whole district having laptops taken away
• It’s a good source to use in the classroom so we don’t have to wait for the computerlabs
• Easy source to have reasearch done
• Having firewalls
• Sites being block for inappropriate uses, and making it difficult to research on certain websites while being blocked.
• Easier to use than laptops
Heather Period 1.
I like what heather wrote because I agree with her also. Not all the students should be suffering for one person downloading inappropriate images. Also, it is true that the internet is more updated than the books. To make it safe, we should only use it when needed, such as research papers, and work on in class assignments, and projects. It is a good thing that it is locked in room, and that it is used in one class only.
Guidelines:
Keeping then locked in one room
Only for class assignments, or tasks
Walk around the room, to make sure students aren’t abusing the laptops in any certain ways
Have very strict rules for using laptops
No food or drinks around the laptops

ReplyDelete1.
3.) I really liked the comment from Anja, period 5, because she says, “I don't think that the major point of using the laptops should be just to see if overall academic performance will improve. Laptops or not, student still have to have some sort of interest in the subject to do well. I believe that the use of the laptops should be for providing more options on how to do your work so everyone can choose their individual preference.” I like this comment because it’s true and gives good reasoning to why student’s academic performance don’t always go up.
2.) I really liked the comment from Alexa, period 7, because in her comment, she writes about how school is used to prepare yourself for the future. She goes on to say that our future needs us to gain complete knowledge of how to use technology to our greatest potentional and we need laptops in school if we want to achieve that goal. I believe that what she said is very true and a good reason towards why we need the laptops in the classroom.
3.) I really liked the comment from Dan, period 1, because he mentions how if teachers have a smart board available, the teacher can email the students the notes and students who are poor at note-taking can always look back on the notes to get a stronger sense of the subject. I like this comment because it shows how this thing done easily over the internet makes learning better for all students.
2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1.) Laptops should be use for educational purposes only.
2.) Laptops should be handled with the upmost care. If anyone intentially damages a laptop, they should be hold responsible to pay the fines. Also, if anyone spends the class not using the laptops for educational purposes or attempting to break into the school’s firewall, they should loose their priviledge of using the laptops and have the responsibility of doing their missed work and homework at home.
3.) Laptops should only be used in the classroom and during the class, unless the student is using it during a study hall and is being supervised by a teacher.

Laptop Etiquette Policy-F14
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the articles, one of the articles really popped out at me.I definitely agree with what Catherine in Period 1 said about laptops. She said how laptops are great to use in the classroom, but we shouldn't always rely on them. I totally agree. If we keep on relying on these laptops, there is going to be a lot of danger for students in there future. Some things you can't just get out of the computer. I also agree with what Angel in Period 5 was saying. She said how parents are feeling ripped off from the cost of the laptops especially when these children are using them for inappropriate reasons. I know for a fact that if my parents were paying for all that money and I was goofing off I would be in big trouble!
We should always have guidelines when it comes to laptops or school computers in general. I think the best guideline would be to never use a school laptop for any other reason but your school class work or homework. Another guideline for laptops would be that we shouldn't use laptops for every little thing that comes with work. If we do we are going to be lost when we have to take the SAT test and we have no use of the laptops. Lastly I think students should be given time limits when they have assignments on the laptops so once there done with there work they don’t have all that extra time to do what they want and surf the web with out any limits.
1. I really liked the comment from Angel! Because she said, “The art of thinking is lost.” This shows that kids will become dependent on the laptops because they are not thinking for themselves. All of the information is right in front of them and they don’t have to think about anything except the website that it is on.
ReplyDeleteI also really liked the comment from Dan Period One because he said that laptops should be used only in the classroom. That should be no question, students are very careless and they mistreat the laptops. I also agree with the fact that he thinks the laptop can become a staple in classroom life.
2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
a. The laptops sole use should be in the classroom and in the classroom only.
b. During class, laptops should be used for taking notes or typing something for an essay or paper that is due.
c. When using the laptops, the students shouldn’t go to other websites or do anything else.
Notes on Comments
ReplyDelete• I really liked the comment “I think that one of the most significant reasons why is that the use of the internet expands all opportunities to gather valid information.” from Chris Period 5 because the internet truly is an amazing resource and you can find anything you want when you need it.
• I really like the comment “I am in awe how students could take the privilege of having laptops available in their classrooms for granted.” From Julie Period 1 because it’s so true how kids don’t realize how good they have it until its gone. I guarantee those kids who got the laptops taken away from them are regretting what they had done to get them taken away.
Class Guidelines
1. If a person is found on an inappropriate site they should have laptop privileges taken away from them.
2. No drinks or Food around Laptops.
3. Damaging of Laptop results in revocation of Laptop and suspension.
Dan said...
ReplyDeleteNo matter where you turn you always hear that technology is the way of the future, so it is not surprising to me that we are beginning to turn to it in our class. First off, I believe for our laptops to make the biggest impact they possibly can we must have lessons that can only be taught through use of the laptops, otherwise, as the teacher in the second article said, we are just making the old way of teaching more expensive. Another addition that the laptops can bring to the classroom is pre-typed notes. Many times when teachers give notes and they have a smart board available they put the notes in a file on the smart board, making it easy to just email it to the students. This will make it so even the poorer note takers can have quality notes to look back on and study with. Lastly a great way to utilize the laptops in the classroom would be to use classroom run blogs, forums, etc. to stimulate conversation that perhaps even the shyer students can get involved in.
I’d like to end my comment by saying that using laptops in the classroom can have a positive effect as long as they are used and only in the classroom. Many people would disagree and use the article from the New York Times as proof but I would like to point out how important the bolded sections of my statement are. Technology can only be utilized when it is actually used so it does not just become a shiny piece of scenery performing no needed task in our classroom. Secondly, technology can only be properly used under supervision. The reason laptops failed so badly in Liverpool High is because the students where given too much freedom with the laptops, I feel the stricter measures taken here at BHS will help laptops become a staple in the classroom environment.
~Dan Period 1
The comment made by Dan was very appealing to me because he mentioned that yes the students of Liverpool High did in fact not make any noticeable improvement but they where however not properly supervised. Secondly he mentioned that classroom blogs would help shyer students to become more active in the class.
Guidelines:
1. Carry latops with 2 hands
2. No food or drinks near laptops
3. Only do work you are ask to do unless given permission
1. I really liked the comment(s) from Riley period 7, and Carter period 7 because I feel they both addressed issues which would not only hinder the use of laptops in the classroom, but push the entire school toward the idea of banning them altogether. Riley said that one of the biggest reasons the laptops failed in Liverpool High was because the students where actually given the laptops, I strongly agree with this because I know time with a computer would allow some students the time to tamper with the firewall, and tell others how to do what they did. This would tempt the kids who originally weren’t going to mess around. Carter brought up another good point which will be necessary for our classroom to follow; we cannot know how to learn with technology without the teacher knowing how to teach with it. Before an assignment, activity, etc. is given from the teacher to the class the teacher must have a good understanding on how to use the assignment themselves. Teachers must also learn what the technology actually makes available to them, and exactly how it can benefit the students.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
A. Laptops should be used in, and only in the classroom. Taking a laptop home is generally a bad idea for many reasons: kids are not in control to what happens to them there, someone else can spill a liquid, or knock it over breaking it while the student isn’t there. Also if there is any bad intent in the borrower, taking a laptop home would allow them to install their own software, letting them fool around with the computer in class, and the student would be using their own internet servers where they can get around the firewalls and visit any website they wish, which may cause technical problems to the computer in later times, or let them download malicious software or adware.
B. Drinks should not be on desks and food should not be eaten while the laptops are out. The reasoning behind this rule should be fairly obvious. Drinks can easily be spilled, and the liquid can break the laptop. Perhaps students can just be told to put drinks on the floor, and hopefully it doesn’t come down to banning drinks in class altogether.
C. Extra care when putting the laptops away. Most laptop drops occur when putting the laptop away, because everyone is rushing to put it away. Extra time should be given when putting the laptops away and laptops should be put away in waves, so everyone is not on top of each other.
~Dan A Period 1
1. I liked the comment from Alexa in period 7 because using the laptops does help us get a better knowledge. They should be used in school because students can learn more from laptops than book. It is also true that miusing the laptops is the same as vandalizing books. I agree that there should be certain rules and codes so students cannot access the websites that they are not supposed to.
ReplyDeleteI also liked the comment from Abby in period 7 because having laptops has advantages and disadvantages. They make projects a lot easier and they are much easier to work with instead of going to a computer lab. The laptops can be distracting for students so they don’t pay attention to their teachers.
2. Students should pay attention to their school work on the laptops.
There should be better blocking and codes for the computers.
Students that are misusing the computers should face consequences.

Segei in period 3 made many good points in his blog. I liked how he said that having so many laptops is such a strain on the budget, and we should be putting the money towards other things such as books, or new gym lockers. He also stated hat desktops are much cheaper and would be a lot easier on the budget.
ReplyDeleteMelissa in period 5 said that laptops are much more convenient, and I agreed with this. She also said that sometimes when we do go to the computer labs, there are sometimes not enough computes for everyone, which is also true. Having laptops in classes are much more convenient and easier for everyone.
1.) Don’t use the laptops to visit inaropriate sites
2.) Anyone who breaks the laptop should pay for the damages.
3.) Do not take the laptops outside of the classroom for any reason
Jake Period 1
I really liked the comments from Heather period 7 saying “Teachers should be strict with the laptops because they are expensive. … assign each student a laptop, and at the end of class the teacher should go around and make sure that all the laptops are still in good shape.” Her thinking is a great guideline that should be used in the care of the laptops. The laptops are very expensive and the school doesn’t want to have to replace them because some kids were messing around with them. They should be taken care of properly and treat them as you would treat your own computer, but not use them as you would use your own computer. I also like the comments from Dan period 1 saying “… a great way to utilize the laptops in the classroom would be to use classroom run blogs, forums, etc. to stimulate conversation that perhaps even the shyer students can get involved in.” I believe this is very true and could get more class participation from students that don’t normally speak up. More people can become engaged in conversation and discussion that can be helpful for our learning. It could get everyone’s mind rolling and it may even be more fun to get involved because it is through technology which can be very enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteThe following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. At the beginning/end of class when using the laptops they should be inspected for any damage to prevent false accusations in any damage of the computers
2. They should be used mainly for any work/research done in F14 and not for personal uses such as IM, browsing inappropriate sites, etc.
3. They should be put back in their proper place at the end of class and make sure they are plugged in
4. No food or drinks around the laptops
-Krista Period 1
1. I really liked the comments from Dan from Period 1 because they were descriptive and answered most of the questions asked. Aside from this, he mentioned other things including “a great way to utilize the laptops in the classroom … [running] blogs, forums, etc. to stimulate conversation that perhaps even the shyer students can get involved in.” I think this is a great idea because it would help quieter students express their opinions and feelings about things in front of their peers. Another comment which I found to be true had to do with the failing laptops, “the reason … is because the students where given too much freedom with the laptops … the stricter measures taken here at BHS will help laptops become a staple in the classroom environment.” This is obviously a problem, and instead of working it out (by allowing laptops only during class time), laptops were removed completely. At BHS, laptops are only allowed during class time, and they’re handled carefully from the beginning to the end of the class.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our laptop etiquette policy in F14:
1. No food or drinks around laptops.
2. If a person is found on an inappropriate site, they should have their laptop privileges revoked
3. Do not take laptops out of the classroom
Haleema, Period 1
I really liked the comments from Erin in period 5 because she brought up a point I hadn’t even thought of- computer labs. We’re going to be using computers at some point or another, and wasting the time to go to a computer lab where chances are there will be at least 2 computers that are slow, don’t work, or have a missing mouse, its better that we just use the computers in the class. They save a lot of time having them right at your fingertips.
ReplyDeleteI also really liked what Brittany in period 1 said. She mentioned that the laptops are great technology to have in the classroom and maybe shouldn’t just be targeted to improve learning completely, but that it should also be known that the laptops are a great resource.
The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. Laptops should not be used to view inappropriate websites, or websites that aren’t part of what you’re doing, like Facebook or ESPN.
2. Laptops should be treated carefully- no food or drink allowed near laptops.
3. Laptops should be put back in their proper place when done using them and plugged into the chargers

1. I found the comment “i think that it is unfair that because of a select few students failing to be responsible in using the laptops that the whole district should have to be punished” from chris per5 interesting because I believe the exact oppiste. If one student can’t be responsible enough to follow the rules, then eventually the whole school will be irresponsible because of their influence. If the rules of the laptop use can’t be inforced, then there should be any laptops at all. Also, I found the comment “i think the school in liverpool didnt do a enough job of setting up a fire wall. if a 10th grade student can bypass a fire wall its obvisouly done not up to standard.”from skyler8 signifigant because of the way it coincides with my own opinion. I agree that it is a privelege and that it should be respected. There was not a firewall to block a child at our grade level out of the illegal sites and the board of education should be ashamed of themselves.

2.” I think that the students should respect the rules that are giving by the school.” Greg Morgan Per 7
3.” We should not be bypassing the blocks to the internet.” Greg Morgan Per 7

Of all of the comments I agree with I would have to agree with Angel and Catherine. Angel made a good point by talking about how technology changes every day and how it’s practically impossible to keep up with its fast paced change. I also agree with Catherine and how she said that laptops shouldn’t be the main teaching guide. They are good for researching things quickly, but teachers should still teach classes nit rely on laptops.
ReplyDeleteThe following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette:
1. Put the screen down when the teacher is talking, it’s not only disrespectful but also hlps the teacher see who is paying attention and who is doing something they shouldn’t be
2. Carry the laptops with extreme care, these aren’t cheap and our school cant afford to buy new ones every year
3. Treat the laptops as if they were your own, would you break key off of your laptop?
1.I really liked the comments from Dan period 1 who brought up the idea about pretyped notes, and how that poor notetakers can now have qaulity notes. I think it’s a really original idea about how laptops can be utilized to improve preformence in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI also like how Bridget from period 5 brought up the fact that our generation is getting lazy. I think that’s true and now having laptops in class is just making it worse. Doing projects on a computer is much easier than doing projects on a poster for students.
2.The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F-14
1. No going on inapropriate sites or downloading in opropriate things on the laptops.
2. No food or drinks around the laptops.
3. Only use the laptop assigned to you unless the teachers says otherwise.
4. Be careful when carrying and using the laptops.
• I really liked the comment from Coral. She said that adults generalize a lot. Just because a school abused their privileges doesn’t mean that every student in every school will do the same. If students, like the ones in Liverpool, are not being supervised and not getting discipline then, like Coral said, students will choose to do what they can get away with. We are being supervised and we are signing out the computers. Also, we don’t get to take then out of class and home. That makes a huge difference too. They can find ways around the security systems in their free time and when they take them home. If we were to do that in class we would waste our time and never get any work done. I wouldn’t want to get a zero on my assignment because I was trying to get around some security system that I could get around when I was at home if I wanted to. I also liked Riley’s comment. He said that students in Liverpool were taking their computers out of class and using them to download music and so as they please. Teachers and adults ask themselves why we do what we do online and in class, well then they should make some form of REASONABLE guidelines for us to follow.
ReplyDelete• Only be able to use them for certain classes.
• Keep them in class.
• Use them for only school work.

2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three)
I liked Angel’s comments because they were extremely articulate and made very good points. She talked about how the money in the budget that was being spent on the laptops might be better spent on buying necessities, and how the use of laptops would reduce the critical thinking that students have to do. I think this is very interesting to make a connection between computer use and the ability to think critically.
I also liked Dan’s (Period 1) comments because he realized that the best way to utilize the laptops would be to have lessons that could not be done without the laptops. I think that using the computers to learn things that would not normally be able to be learned is a good idea, since using laptops with normal lessons clearly does not affect how children learn (based on the studies done at Texas Educational Center, among others).
Laptop Etiquette Guidelines
1. The laptops should only be used for class related subjects; they cannot be used for frivolous purposes, or for other classes.
2. Do not disrespect the laptops-do not write on them or otherwise vandalize them in any way.
3. Any misuse of the laptops will result in immediate revocation of laptop privilege.
Angel made a very good point about the use of laptops in class. Teachers are supposed to protect us from being lazy, with the use of laptops, us students are only getting lazier. She also said that were not thinking as much as we would by doing research with books. When we look for articles online its something that someone else has written. We are not thinking for ourselves. Even though students have blocked websites, kids always find a way to get around it.Heather said that having laptops in class is a good thing. We can do our research from class and not have to go to the library. Most of the time when we try to go to the computer labs, they’re full or the computers don’t work. We can use laptops to our advantage because each student can have a laptop in class. She stated that the internet is more up to date with books. We can get more information through the internet then with books. There should be a limit on the content of the websites. Websites that allow you to access blocked websites, should be blocked. The laptops should have a program that doesn’t let us download things from the internet. That way no pornography or games can be downloaded. We should only use laptops when we actually have to use them. Not to take notes, or to check our email.
ReplyDeleteGuidelines for laptops:
ReplyDeletePeople should have to partially shut their computers when someone else is presenting or needs to have the class’s attention on them.
Anyone found to be doing things they should not on the laptops should lose the laptop for the rest of that day and the following day.
If a computer is broken, the student should have to pay for repairs.
-Rachel
I really liked the comment from Julie, period 1, who said, “Laptops are a huge privilege to have available in the classroom. They cannot only make you better at computers, but also make you a better student.” Her point is exactly the point that I would like to make. She talks about how having computers for every student in the classroom is a privilege, some kids don’t eve have one at home. I feel that having computers is much better, because it can also save time! Typing something out can take much less time than hand writing it and can also teach us the correct spelling of a word without taking our time to look up the word. Typing, now, has become so much a part of everyday life that having laptops can improve a students future. I also liked Alexa’s comment, from period 7, who said, “I agree that there may be flaws in how the laptop situation is being used. In the first article it mentioned how students were misusing their privileges of their laptops by logging on to inappropriate sites.” Her point is exactly right showing that if the school sets up a firewall correctly, taking all precautions. If the firewall is set up wrong, and students are getting past it, it is the school’s fault. Of course students are going to try and get past it, it is the school’s responsibility to keep them for being able to.
ReplyDeleteThe following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three)
a. I think that the firewalls should be test ran multiple times before one is set up. If students can figure a way to get past it, it needs to be altered.
b. Students should take full responsibility for what happens to their assigned laptop. It may be necessary that both the student and parent are aware of the penalty for a damaged computer.
c. Students should be aware of plagiarism and also downloading things non-school related programs. Firewalls should be blocking them. The papers students hand in should be run through a program that detects plagiarism.
ReplyDelete1. I really liked the comment(s) from Gio and Angel because I thought they had very interesting points and they mostly agreed with me. They both thought that laptops weren’t really necessary for student learning and as Gio mentioned, they put a huge strain on the budget and I’d rather have art classes than laptops. And as Angell mentioned, kids are very tempted to play games and watch skate videos instead of doing work. If there is no proof that these laptops aren’t helping our kids, I don’t think there is any reason to continue buying them. Both these writers wrote well evidenced pieces that could pursued a reader to change their mind.
2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three)
1. Time limits should be in place so kids are forced to do their work instead of emailing or talking online.
2. Volume should always be turned down so music and annoying sounds will not be heard.
3. Computer screens should be turned down when others are speaking.
I believe that Angels was the best one I’ve read through Mrs. Baker’s entire English classes bar far. She clearly states all of her opinions and as well as true facts that are fully detailed with excellent reference. I like how she explained how the art of thinking is being lost and trying to encounter that students are not even willing to think anymore because they know that they have the internet right in front of them to answer all of the questions for them. She was also right with the only good usage of having laptops in the vicinity of the classroom is that it will give you a lot of better typing skills. The strongest point I believe she made was that the student’s parents are being ripped off by spending money on the laptops through their taxes when they are not used for their proper manor. There were many other good arguments in the top focus, but Angel clearly top’s everyone else’s.
ReplyDeleteDan from period 1 also made a lot of very good and interesting points. I like how he explained that technology was constantly growing in our future in many obvious ways. Having the laptops in class also refers to the exact same teaching as anyone would, but just making everything more and more expensive. Finally, I liked how he explained that in the article from the high school that was having trouble with the laptops took way too much advantage of them by being able to roam free throughout the school with their own laptops. I think Dan’s comment makes anyone believe that laptops will clearly help the focus of what they are used for, if they don’t leave the classroom.
The laptop equette of this classrom can not be a joke to anyone. Every student taking part in using these laptop must use them with respect and not take advantage of them. First, your lapop should never leave your site, better yet, the classroom. Any laptop gone missing or damaged in anyway, the student should loose all privilidges and the system will be taken right away. Secondly, no food or drink should be anywhere near the computer. Since they are brand new, im sure Mrs. Baker and the other students working on the same laptop as you are does not want them to have all food crums or water damage in anyway. Lastly, the laptops are for non other then just work. Using other sites such as facebook and myspace should not be accessed during the lesson time. This is english class and not a social hour.
Courtney, Period 3
1. I really liked the comment from Gio because it brought up the fact that there are benefits to having laptops and if the access to the laptops is limited to class periods than and the laptops are put away and locked up there is a much lower chance of them being vandalized. However he also mentioned that this is a strain on the arts and could end up causing reductions in the money that the arts departments get.
ReplyDelete2. I liked the comment from Abby K. per 7 because she said that it would be a good idea if the laptops where used correctly. She also said that the laptops are a privlige that we shouldn’t abuse so we don’t lose the privelige.
2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. Used only when nessiary for the class lesons and locked up when not in classes
2. Teachers should be able to take away laptop privleges so that if someone abuses the privlage their in trouble.
3. Students should not touch the laptop of others.
1. I really liked the comment(s) from Catherine Per. 1 and Heather Per. 1 because... (Note at least two) because Catherine said that laptops are good to use in classes but she also said that you will not always have a laptops to type on and you cant use it during the SAT’s. She also said that if students use laptops a lot they will lose interest in materials thought bye regular teachers. She said that the laptops get used to much in schools and they don’t have to be used for every thing in classrooms. Heather on the other hand said that laptops are good to have in the classroom because they are more updated than the books we have in schools. She also said that using laptops in the classrooms is better than the computers in the computer labs. Then she said that students don’t have to use the laptops for everything because if they have good hand writing then they can write it out.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three)
1. Treat the laptops like they are yours.
2. Don’t visit inappropriate sites
3. You should only use the laptops for research and writing papers
-Gurjinder per.3
1. I really liked the comment(s) from anonymous because... (Note at least two) we don’t have to go to computer labs any more. Also we don’t hve to worry about if there is enough computers for everyone. I also like Ryan V because it says that we should use the lab tops during class time but we should not take them out of the class room.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three) you have to be care full with the computers you should not abuse them. You should not through the cmputers. Also you should hold the computers with two hands because if they break you have to pay for them.
joe class 3
1. I really liked the comment(s) from Sergei and Dan because they both typed a lot of information on it and seemed to put a lot of thought into it and they used facts to back it up. (Note at least two)
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three)
a. Follow the same rules for the laptops as you would the rules of the regular stationary computers.
b. We shouldn’t use the computers for everything we do.
c. We shouldn’t type while the teacher is talking.
ReplyDelete1. I really liked the comment(s) from Angel and Cait , because Angel was very was very specific with her opinion. I agree with her that laptops are very little use to schools. She stated her facts and stuck to it. I think she is right about the money should be put to better use in poverty struck cities and towns in CT. She had good points which were true statements. I liked Cait’s comment because she stated that laptops are really a good opportunity to go onto Facebook or Myspace and other things when it should be used for work.
2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three)
1. I think when a student is using a laptop for work or a project, it should always be facing towards the teacher so they know what they are doing at all times.
2. Laptops should not be used for anything other than work in school.
3. Schools should block things like facebook and myspace on laptops so students get their work done on time.
1.I really liked the comment(s) from Gio because... (Note at least two) he stated good and bad points about the topic. He included a lot of good statements and issues about both of the sides. It was easy to understand and not all over the place. I liked when he said that it will be a major drawback with the laptops. It would be the strain on the budget. I thought that was so true and it’s important for people to understand how each school budgets work. I also thought that when he said when teachers are looking students are less tempted and they won’t do nothing that is unacceptable. His paragraphs were good all around. Gio helped me a lot with writing all he wrote and he stated everything in there that all of us needed to know about Liverpool students.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three) the rules should be abided by and the computers should not be mistreated at all. Personally I don’t think that the students at my school will mistreat them because we have too much respect for our teachers for letting us use them and we know what’s right and wrong. We are very appreciative of what we get from teachers and we don’t mistreat them at all. My class is like example of the way our whole school should act with stuff that is not there’s. So the rules are very common to us and we know how to use the computers.
In Angels reaction to the article on laptops I really like when she talks about the art of thinking as bring lost. It refers to the father of an eleventh grade boy who is starting to see lazy behavior in his because of the lack of work that he has to do now that he has his very own laptop for school. And with this lazy behavior there is also the constant easy access to the internet which leads to online gaming and pornography.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I like Alexa’s response is that she also talks about the art of thinking as being lost but opposes it. She believes that everything is being done with computers now with the new technology so why not just start preparing now by learning how to use computers for everyday tasks at school. I am agreeing with this because I also think that with these new computers kids can get a lot out of using them there just has to be something done about the things students are doing online.
1. I really liked the comment(s) from Ryan v from period 1 and Gio from period 3 because I agree that the having laptops available for use by any student at all times is a good idea. The faculty and staff in Liverpool allowed their students to take the laptops out of the classrooms only to found them to be misused. Also the class would have to go to the computer labs without the labtops. Half of the computers in the computer lab don’t even work and there aren’t enough computers for the entire class there any way.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
The labtops shouldn’t leave the class room so that students can’t misuse them with out the teacher knowing or be vandalized like most of the computers in the computer lab. We should only use the labtops for class projects and essay and research for class projects. And the labtops should be handled with care so we don’t have to use money to repair or replace them.
doug perod 5
1. I really liked the comment(s) from Heather, period 1 and Riley, period 7 because they both explained how the laptops should be used in the classroom. Riley went as far as saying that they should not even leave the classroom. Heather explained how the laptops can help improve the way students gain information for papers and research. Both people explained that the laptops can definitely improve how work is done, but they must be used in the right way.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. Laptops should not leave the classroom for any reason
2. No food or drink near the laptops
3. Do not share your password with anyone
4. Do not send e-mails to friends
5. Use them for school related purposes w/ teacher’s permission
1.I really liked the comment(s) from Chris in period five because. He made a good point by saying that the laptops help a student extremely by getting to use the internet and other things for homework. But he backed it p well also because he stated that if a student used the laptop for pornography or instant messaging then that student will loose his/her privileges, rather than the whole school loose the laptops. Also he mentioned that if a student does get pornography on the computer or does do instant messaging that will only effect his school work but will not do damage to the computers or cost money for the parents.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three)
a. Make rules that the students/users of their laptops have to follow to set their guidelines.
b. If the student/user obeys the rules the have a consequence they have to face or loose their laptop privileges.
c. I laptop is broken or stolen it should be paid
I wholeheartedly agree with Gio from period 3. Why would teachers think that if you add computers to the classroom, they would see drastic results? With or without laptops, there and good and bad students. And if you give a laptop to an immature individual, trust him or her to be by his or herself and not abuse this power, you are very naïve. My point also goes hand-in-hand with Emmett’s. Kids nowadays do not have honor; sadly, we are not a very honest group of people. We will cheat if we have the chance, which is why we NEED regulations, NEED teachers to pay attention to our computer use.
ReplyDeleteAs to guidelines, maybe if Liverpool High School teachers had made some, hacking and downloading of pornography would never have happened.
1. Time limits on the use of laptops.
2. No eating or drinking near the laptops.
3. Immeadiate punishment to those who abuse websites, etc.
1. I really liked the comment(s) from Anja in period 5 because I totally agree that the main idea for using laptops should not be to improve academically but to learn computer skills and to work on projects or homework assignments. I also agree with Bridget from period 5 because also in my post I said that the schools should be more aware and strict with students. The students should lose their right to the computer and be punished for going on inappropriate websites.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. No food or drink should be eaten near laptops or while using them.
2. Do not share your school password with anyone.
3. A teacher must be in the vicinity or presence of a student while using a laptop.
4. When the teacher is talking, always pick your head up, so they are aware you are listening and paying attention.
kiana, period 5
1. I really liked the comment(s) from Angel, period 5. She brought
ReplyDeleteup a good point about how in the future, all the technology that we have might cause people to stop using their own ideas and thoughts. I also like the comment from Alice, Period 7. She gave ideas about how the teacher can know that we are paying attention.
2. Some guidelines for using the laptops should be to not eat or drink near them, to fold them down when the teacher is talking, and to not go on for something off topic.
-Anja, Period5
1. I really liked the comment(s) from Taylor P-1 and Molly P-7 because they agree that we don’t need lap tops, but they are helpful and a privilege, it’s much easier to have them in the class room than have to waste time going to the computer lab where the computers don’t even work. Students should take care of lap tops and treat them like their own. If they don’t follow the rules, there should be consequences.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three)
1. Students should only use them in the classroom and work on the assigned work.
2. Students shouldn’t be allowed to go on other web sites, play games, watch movies, or listen to music.
3. You shouldn’t be allowed to use the lap top if you disobey the policy.
Skyler made a good point on the set up of firewall; although there are some students who are very good with hacking, if a good amount of students were able to get past it there must be a problem. He also mentioned how he thinks that having the laptops were meant to help the kids learn and take over the teachers position; but when really I think it was meant to be an aid and help in classes. Although if teachers are over using them it can take away the point of being taught my a teacher. Also Emily made a good point about not having to leave the classroom to go to a lab that might be full of other students; which would be time wasted that could have been spent on the working on the assignment.
ReplyDeleteSome rules that should be considered are ...
1. The amount of time allowed on computers during a week , so that the teacher has time to teach lessons planned and be able to learn from her/ him too
2. Also teachers should consider other resources for research such as books, encyclopedias etc.
3. Laptops should not be used for all writing , note taking etc. so that hand writing and dictionary use can still be unforced.
1. I really liked the comments from Kate in period 8. I think that she makes a good point of the schools not blocking websites well enough if a 10th grader can get past them so easily. The schools should know that some or most of the students are going to try to take advantage of the laptops, and that they have a job to try to prevent that. I also liked how she mentioned that having the laptops makes the work a lot easier, and you don’t have to deal with going to the computer lab all the time. And finally, I agree with her that if a couple or a few students are abusing the laptops, but the rest of the class is not, then only the students who were should have their privileges away from them.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the comments from Taylor period 1. I think he makes a good point that its different here in Branford than it is in Liverpool because Branford does a good job of blocking inappropriate things. I don’t think that students misusing the laptops is as big a problem in Branford as it is in other towns, as the articles told us.
2. a. We should treat the laptops with respect
b. We should only use the laptops for what the teacher assigned us to do
c. The laptops should never, under any circumstance leave the classroom
1. I really liked the comment(s) from Coral period 3 because I think that it is the students choice of how they want to complete an assignment. If you hand a foolish student a pencil and paper and he doesn’t want to complete the assignment he is either going to just not do it or sit there and doodle on the paper. If there was increased supervision and better firewalls this would not have happened. In the article, shows the students of Liverpool High School using the computers in the cafeteria. To me that looks like they are just not only giving the possibility for the students to misuse the internet, but also for the laptops to be damaged in the cafeteria. I don’t understand why the faculty would allow students to bring the laptops out of the classroom, let alone in the cafeteria. There’s probably about a thousand students in that cafeteria eating and drinking. Chances are, something is going to get spilled on the laptops one way or another. I think
ReplyDeleteI liked the comment from Greg Morgan peroid 7 because I think that it is the schools responsibility to make sure that students sould not be able to bypass the blocks set up by the school. Im sure that there are many programs that will block you from bypassing the blockade. If the in fact isn’t, then just block the IP sites that allow you to get past the blocks. But its not only the schools responsibility, it is also the students to not misuse the laptops in any way. I also think that the laptops should be confined to the classroom and not taken to any other possible unsupervised parts of the school.
2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three)
• Only use the laptops for research only.
• Keep the laptops supervised
• Put restrictions on which sites students can visit.
1. I really liked the comment(s) from Skyler in period 8 and Greg in period 7. I agree with skyler because if the school put a better fire wall on then the kids wouldn’t be able to hack it. I also don’t agree with Mark Lawson because the computer might be a distraction but I helps the students be organized and helps them get information faster. I agree with Greg because if the students if the students fallowed directions then they wouldn’t have taken advantage with the laptops by bypassing the fire wall and by taking good care of the laptops.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines for our class should be
1. Handle laptops with care. Don’t eat or drink near laptops.
2. If a student is misusing the laptops then they should be kicked off for a week.
3. Do not vandalize computer, do not go on sites that are not related to school.
1. I really liked the comments from Angel (period 5) and Dan (period 1) because Angel had a very valid point for someone who is against the laptops and brought up a good argument, and Dan had a similar point to mine and also mentioned many other interesting points. Angel made the point that we are getting “too wound up in technology therefore affecting our ability to think.” She also mentioned how parents are angry that their tax dollars were being spent largely on the repairs and purchases of these machines. Dan argued that the laptops are a good resource to have in the classroom, but they should be used only for classroom purposes. He also thought that the technology could be very useful if used to correct way under supervision, which I agree with very much. I made a similar point in my comment.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: Students should use the laptops to their advantage and not visit inappropriate websites, students should not vandalize the laptops at all, and the laptops should be handled with care. We have the privilege of being able to use these laptops so students should not waste time by getting past firewalls to get to unnecessary or inappropriate websites. Students should also not try to purposely vandalize the laptops. That ruins the opportunity for someone else to use the laptop. Lastly, when being taken out or put away, the laptops should be held with both hands so they don’t get dropped. Also, there should be no food or drink on the table where the laptop is being used.
Erin - Period 5
I really liked the comment from Angel period 5. Angel wrote a very long detailed response and supported her topic very well. Angel is against having laptops at school, and made many strong points as to why there should not be laptops at school. My favorite point by her was “the art of thinking is being lost.” Another comment that I agreed with was Taylor from period 1. She was supporting the point that not all kids will abuse the privilege of using laptops, and that kids should be given a chance.
ReplyDeleteSince we are privileged enough to have the laptops in class, there defiantly should be some guidelines to using them.
1) Kids should respect guidelines, and if they don’t the privilege should be taken away from them.
2) Teachers should keep a close eye on students while using the laptops.
3) Laptops should never leave the English room.
1.I really liked the comment from Abby from period 5. This is because I agree with her when she said that nothing gets done from students during class. One reason is because there is always going to be technical difficulties. The teacher will be going around the classroom spending more time helping a student fix their computer than helping the student with their work. Usually, teacher won’t even know how to work the lab tops themselves, but the students do. Computers also get viruses very easily, making it harder for students to do their work. I also agree with Abby when she said that the lab tops are distracting for the students, because they will most likely be fooling around rather than doing the work.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
-The lab tops should be used for school related subjects.
-There should be more restrictions on the internet.
-Lab tops should be kept in the classroom
1. I really liked the comment(s) from skyler because it true what he is saying. Without the laptops there is no education for the students and the teachers. Teachers are now getting into laptops and it is an easier way to teach your students then writing on the board twenty-four seven. Also if they are getting throw the block wall it means the tec. People are not doing there job to protect us from getting throw the block wall.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the comment(s) from heather because it is true that we only got laptops because of research. Also they should do writing things sometimes and use there computer when they need to use it. Students should use the laptops wisely and try not lose there ability to use the laptops.
2. We should keep the laptops because e will need them in the future and we should have a better blocking system if they don’t want us to go on to other websites. Also we should take care of these laptops because one they are not ours to damage them and they belong to the school. The school should make a policy with the students that if damage should pay for it and can’t use them threw high school since they don’t know who to take care of them. Laptops are good for us students due to the updated information and things.

ReplyDeleteI liked the comments from Carter Wells and Kayty Smith. They both noted the fantastic opportunities afforded by classroom laptops but observed that new steps were necessary in schools’ educational systems to handle the new technology. For instance, as Carter said, teacher training is a core concern for those trying to incorporate laptops usefully and effectively in classrooms. Katie also mentioned that supervision is necessary for some students when handling the internet. These two comments nicely illustrate the two biggest challenges that educators face when using laptops in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteAs for F14 etiquette, I’d suggest three simple rules:
1. No typing while the teacher or a classmate is addressing the class. We all say we can multitask, but how many things can we really keep track of at once?
2. Proxy use might be tempting on such fast, sleek computers (since no other computer in the school can seem to handle them, much less the flash games we’re trying to reach) but this is a class, not an open. Use these laptops for school only. You can check your Facebook later.
3. Plagiarism isn’t just illegal and unethical – it’s stupid. Trust me, you’ll get caught. Especially in English class, of all classes. Respect Mrs. Baker’s intelligence and don’t try to get away with turning in work that’s not your own.
1. I really liked the comment(s) from Coral period 3 because I think that it is the students choice of how they want to complete an assignment. I really liked the comment from Michael because he used very good vocabulary. Also i agree with him that the laptops do get us ready for the future.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the comment from Madeline because she had point about useing laptops are faster than going to the computer labs.
3 RULES FOR USEING THE LAPTOPS.
1. We shouls all put the laptops back at the end of the class neatly.
2. Make sure when pluging your laptop in you use the charger that goes with your number.
3. stay on task, and don't mess around with the coputers, and do what you are told other than doing something else.
I really liked the comment from Corey w. in p. 7 because the security in the school is pretty
ReplyDeletetight so I don't think there would be a problem with people roaming the net freely. Every school system
is different, including their security procedures on the net. Also it is true that most computers are
missing pieces or not working. Last I would have to agree with Corey that technology still has a great
potential in schools. Also I really liked the comment from Erin - Per. 5 because computer labs aren't
always available or are too slow. Last I would have to say that papers get done quicker and leave less
homework to be done.
The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
Periodically walk around the room and check to see what people are doing. Also keep record of who
uses which laptop everyday and inspect them after every use for any damages. Last I would have to
suggest that the laptops should stay in the room.
Brendan Period 7
My favorite comments I read were by Haleema in period 1 and Coral5 because they had good arguments and I liked their writing style. Haleema had some great points, like saying how laptops will improve students’ understanding of technology. After all, we are moving into the technology age and using the laptops would give us a higher understanding of what’s to come in the future. I also agree with her that the internet is beneficial because it has many resources we can use. Using the internet, we can research different topics to write about, and look up words quicker. There are so many things we can do by using the internet and therefore we should use it to our advantage. Coral5 also makes a good point stating that the teachers probably didn’t do a good job controlling the students. If they did, then there would be less students getting in trouble. Molly from period 7 made a good guideline that said people should be punished if they abuse their privileges.
ReplyDeleteThe following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1.Treat the laptops with care.
2.When the teacher is talking, bend down the laptop so the teacher knows you are paying attention.
3.The teacher should check the laptops every now and then during class to make sure the students are on task.
4.Do only what the teacher tells you to do.
5.If any of the guidelines are broken, a punishment should be given.
Alice Ni- Period 7
1. I really liked the comments from Gio, Period 3, and Anja, period 5. A good point he brought u was how the laptops can help conserve paper. The environmetntalists of the word would love this idea. It's a concept that is so true, yet I didn't even bother to think of it. I liked Anja's comment because she stated that laptops are good, but shouldn't replace things such as classroom discussios. I feel this is so true. The laptops may be used for some things but they shouldn't replaec all learing techniquest in the classroom.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
-When Mrs. Baker is talking, or explaining what we should be doing, everyone should tilt their screens edow to show that they are paying attention and not staring at their screens.
-Students should be allowed to use the laptops to take notes
-No student should touch or play with someone else's laptop when the other student isn't looking.
Alexa, Period 7
2. The following guidelines should become part of our laptop etiquette policy in f14:
ReplyDeletea. we should treat the laptops the way we want to be treated; with love and care.
b. when i teacher is talking we should have the laptops down and we shouldn't be allowed on any site that we aren't supposed to be on.
c. we should be able to have fun with the laptops without abusing our privileges.

per. 7
I really like the comments from Alice period 7 and Molly period period 7. I like how Molly mentioned that most students dont recieve laptops until they're going into college so they will treat them with much care. I also think she made a good point about how laptops will save space and it will make it easier for teachers because they won't have to fill out a schedule to get into a computer lab. Alice's comment about making it easier and faster to look up word definaitions is also a good point. We won't have to spend time searching through a dictionary and wasting time. Alice also said that when the teacher needs our attentions we should put the laptop down so we can have our full attention towards the teacher.
ReplyDeleteThe following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1. Laptops shuold be closed, or pushed down when the teacher wants your attention.
2. Any use of the laptop for non-educational reasons should result in confiscation of the laptop.
3. Laptops should be managed wih care and not to be fooled around with.
4. If anyone doesnt follow he rules there should be a punishment so the rest of the class can continue the use of the laptops without a problem.
Ally, Period 7
I reilly liked the point Ally from period 7 made when she said that students can type faster than they can write. This is true because most high school students communicate through email and AIM. So they are constantly typing, which makes them faster at it. So sudents may get their assignments done faster when they type it in class, rather then having to write it. I also liked the comment Alice from period 7 made. She mentioned that students could look up information on the internet faster. This is also true because looking for information on the internet is a lot faster then haing to look it up in a book. Even if the books were put onine then it wold be easier to look up the information in them.
ReplyDeleteThe following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
a. Students cannot touch any other laptop then their own. They can't move it or type somethng on it.
b. Students can only use the laptop for the assignment Mrs. Baker assigns; they can't use it for assignments from other classes.
c. Students cannot eat or drink while using the laptops.
Molly, period 7
I really like what angel wrote. I agree with her fir the most part. That is true by using laptops it does make us more lazy. I really never thought about that untill i read it. It's like we're taken the short cut out by using the computers instead of books. Book's can help us get better knownledge for life. Sometimes the computer doesn't get the job done.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with kristin as well. Even though its something totaly different i agree with hers too. By using the computers it can get the job done faster & you can look up things quicker. The teacher just has to keep an eye on the kids and what not.
^ oopsies. i meant when a techer, not i teacher.
ReplyDelete1. I really like the comment from Emily in period 5, because she siad that, we don't need to go to computer lab anymore, we also don't have to worry anout not being many computr for everybody. Having the laptops in class saves us lots of time during researching. Also Laptops are very valuable and expensive. it is one of the most important learning tools.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
a)The laptop should always stay in the classroom. Students shouldn’t be allowed to sign them out and take them home.
b)Do exactly as your teacher instructs while using the laptops.
c)Student should always respect school property.

Period 7
i felt that the comments from Madeline in peroid 7 and Abby from peroid 5 were very helpful because she thought that the lap tops were a great investent in our school. abby said that kids get nothing done in class and i also agree with her. i agree with both sides of the story.
ReplyDeleteI liked the quotes by sergei period 5 and brian period 7. I agree that the laptps although they are nice have dont really help and arent a neccessity. If mneys an issue then computer labs are just fine, and the money should be used for paper and assorted other spplies.
ReplyDeleteI only have one suggestion, no innapropriate sites or material on the laptops
Brian period 7
1. I really liked skyler’s comment about the school in liverpool where the students were able to bypass the firewall. I also liked the comment from Alexa period 7 because she said just because there are a couple faults in this technology it doesn’t mean that we should not use the computers
ReplyDelete2. My suggestion for the rules are:
1. Students should not abuse their privelidges, and if they do, they, and only they, not the rest of the class, should be punished.
2. Students should treat laptops with care.
3. No open drinks or food near or around laptops.
Dan Nelson
1. I really liked the comment from Emily in period 5. I agreed this response because Emily talked about there not being enough computers in our school labs. She is correct. I myself have been stuck without a computer during several class periods and wasted a lot of time trying to find an available computer in another lab. I especially agree with Emily’s comment stating that yes unfortunately some student are immature and will abuse these new privileged, but why should we all suffer! Hopefully the students that misbehave will get caught and have to suffer the consequences of their misbehavior.
ReplyDeleteI also liked the comment from Julie in period 1. I agree with the shock of some students taking the laptops for granted. Laptops are a huge privilege and should be respected to the max. I liked when Julie brought up the topic of computers helping us all become better students. I do believe this is possible with the new technology. We can now do more advanced research in a shorted amount of time. Looking through books is very time consuming.
2. Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
• Keep food and drinks at an appropriate distance from the laptops.
• Block sites that send a viruses or harm the hardware
• Have supervision while researching
• Keep laptops in the class room at all times
Lindsey period 8
1. I really liked the comment from Chris in period five because he makes a good point about how if a few select students disobey the rules or regulations for using laptops in school, the rest of the student body shouldn’t be punished. What we don’t hear is the stories of the people who benefited from gaining the use of the laptops and internet access during class. He also makes a valid point about how it does not damage or hurt the computer to download pornography to a laptop, yes it is extremely inappropriate but it doesn’t cost money to fix.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Melissa from period seven when she says they are also a big help when we are doing big classroom projects. Most of the time when we are doing a project in school we have to waste time going to the computer lab, looking for computers and trying to not be distracted by people in the library.
2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three.
a.) Students need must only stay on websites that apply directly to the project or assignment that they are doing.
b.) No food or drinks near the laptops
c.) Do not take the laptops out of class
Skyler per. 8
1. I really liked the comments from Cait in period 8. She said how laptops shouldn’t be leased to students but used in the appropriate time slot in whatever class they are using them for. Like our school we only use the laptops during a specific class time and don’t bring them home. That’s the mistake that other schools make. Cait pointed out that actually giving the kids the laptops for the year to bring home is just a huge sign that says go on facebook and myspace. I also liked the comments from Bridget because she states how we should only be using the laptops for research purposes only. Students should use it to look up information they need and use that information in an appropriate manor. I don’t agree with her when she says that it will make us lazy instead of looking up a word in the dictionary because a lot of us and students now never even touch or think about looking at a dictionary.
ReplyDelete2. 1. Don’t use the laptops inappropriately
2. Treat the laptops with respect
3. Don’t go onto websites non related to what we are doing
4. Don’t send e-mails that are bad to other people.
Kate Devlin p.8
ReplyDelete1.I really liked the comment from Chris from period 5. His comment is right to the point and he says what he really thinks about the laptops and the pornography videos. He is also right when he says that even though the videos are wrong it doesn’t damage the laptop and it doesn’t cost money. I really liked the comment from Amanda from period 7 because she makes a good point on if someone does something to the computer you will know who did it. I also like when she says that the teacher can keep a better eye on the students because we are not in a big computer lab all separated.
2.we should respect the use of the computers.
a. we shouldn’t go to websites not related to school work.
b. we shouldn’t abuse the privilege of having the laptops.
c. we should treat the laptops with respect.
Chris per8
ReplyDelete1. I like what Chris Mullen wrote because it is a waste and sooner or later we won’t know how to write anymore because we will be on the computers all the time. Also I like and it is right that my parents are spending all of this money to use these stupid computers. Also my mom could be paying for other students that are using these computers not just me. If I was a parent I wouldn’t like to be paying for people I didn’t know. I would also agree with serge because money can be used for a lot of other things instead of laptops we already have computers and for teachers they have these smart boards. We could of spent money else were with those two Some teachers have two smart boards in the room one in the package that will probably wait until next year to come and one that they are using now.
1.I really liked the comment from Marissa period 8 because she stated that having the computers in the classroom and using the computers help to bring us into the 21st century. Without the knowledge of technology we will have no idea what to do when the 21st century comes around. I also like the comment Krista period 1 said when she said that having the computers in the classroom saves us a trip to the computer lab. We have access to them whenever we need them and we don’t have to wait for a day where we can go to the computer lab.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14
1. Laptops should be placed in there proper place when done using them
2. Take care of the laptops and use them the way they are meant to be used not improperly
3. Laptops should not be allowed out of the classroom and should be under complete watch of the teacher to make sure that they are being used correctly.
jordyn period 8
1. Jim's comment gave the wrong idea about having laptops in class. Jim says "We don't need laptops to improve in our studies. We also don't need to use most of the things we have in school but we use them anyway because this is a growing economic world." This is a growing economic world; therfore we should use the new technology so that hen we get out of school, we will know how to use it, which might help us get a job we wouldn't have gotten if we didn't have cmputer skills. I also thought Alice's comment, "I think having laptops in our classroom is great, but to keep people on task I believe that the teacher should chck everyone's laptop every so often," is a really good idea because if the students know that the teacher will be checking the laptops, they won't be as likely to go on innapropriate sites.
ReplyDelete2. The following guidlines should become part of our laptop ediquette policy in f14:
a. Treat the laptops with care and respect.'
b. Don't go on websites that are blocked by the school, even if you can figure a way around the firewall. If you do, you should lose your laptop priviliges.
c. Use the laptops only to write papers or do whatever you're supposed to be doing. Use it as an advantage, not just another time to go on facebook or look at sports websites.
“Laptops in a classroom are a good idea. They are very convenient for both students and teachers. They should be used, but under close adult supervision.” (Melissa, Per. 7)
ReplyDelete“Sooner or later, computers will be be vital to our daily lives. The potential aid and advantages computers can give to students cannot be denied.” (Carter W. Per. 7)
. I really liked the comment(s) from Melissa and Carter W. because they raised good points, computers will definitely be used more and more in the future and are very convenient and easy to use , but close adult supervision should be employed to help keep the class on track.
2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14: (Suggest at least three)

- No inappropriate websites
- Students should only be allowed to use the laptops for school related purposes
Barnett C. Period 1
1. I really liked the comments from Kiana and Anja because...
ReplyDeleteShe had the right ideas about how and why schools should use laptops. Kiana also had good ideas about what rules there should be concerning the laptops. I liked how she wrote, “the laptops are preparing us for the future because we are living in a electronic driven society”. This is totally true because as the years go on technology is getting more and more advanced. The laptops are definitely helping us for the future.
I also liked Anja’s comments because she thought that the laptops should be an option for the students to use. She doesn’t think that the laptops should be the main focus of our ways to learn, but a bonus that will just add to our learning. Laptops shouldn’t replace the essentials such as dictionaries because they will just make us lazy.
2. The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
1)Treat the laptops with care and don’t break them on purpose. Also be very gentile to them, so they don’t break.
2)Don’t try to break through the security wall and go to bad websites that aren’t apropriate.
3)Use the laptops to help you pay attention in class and don’t go on other websites while Mrs. Baker is trying to teach.
4)Keep the laptops in the classroom because they have a less chance of breaking.
1. I really liked the comment(s) from Alexa Period 7 because she said that laptops are necessary for students since we live in the information age. I agree with this because there is so much technology, that using laptops will help us prepare for the future. I also liked how Alexa said that we are able to access an endless supply of knowledge at our fingertips. The Internet has so much information that you can find anything that you are looking for. Sometimes books don’t always have what you’re looking for because they are outdated, but the Internet always has new information.
ReplyDelete2.The following guidelines should become part of our Laptop Etiquette Policy in F14:
- Have strict Internet blockers for inappropriate sites.
- Keep the laptops in the classroom
- Respect your privilege of having laptops, by not damaging them
