This song is very ironic. The main part where it says, "its raining on a weding day, a free ride, when you alrede paid", the song sounds like it makes no sence. But these are all things that happen in real life and could happen in real life, like the "80 year old man who won the lottery and died the next day", these things can all happen. Shes just pointing them out so people can relize it.
This song shows good examples of irony and some not so good examples of irony. One good example was when she said, "Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly. He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye. He waited his whole damn life to take that flight. And as the plane crashed down he thought, well, isn't this nice?" This part of the song shows how this man all his life was afraid of planes, and when he finally has the courage to go on one it crashes. That was a very good example of irony. A point in the song that I think did not show irony was when she said, "It's like rain on your wedding day." I think when you get rain on your wedding day it's just a coincidence, it doesn't show irony what so ever. Another point in the song where the situation does not show irony is when she said, "It's a free ride when you've already paid.” Instead of irony I agree with the article that said she thinks irony means bad timing. That sentence really did not show irony, just bad timing.
I think this song does show irony. I mean you only have one wedding day out of the year and the day you happen to pick it rains. But with this song i think some of the things are just bad luck. The part where it says Its a death row pardon two minutes too late. The other one that isnt irony that is just bad luck is free ride when you already paid. I agree with ryan from per. 8 that all these things can happen but there not all ironic.
I think the funniest part of the song was what was mentioned in Wikipedia. The fact that the song is entitled "Irony" and yet contains none (which is, in fact, the actual irony of the song) is simply hilarious to me. One can tell that Ms. Morissette tried to include as many examples of irony in her lyrics, however badly she failed at most of them. I think the best accomplishment Morissette acheived with this song was sparking debates among English professors on whether or not she acutally used any irony. In regards to the song, I don't think it's at all outstanding, though the harmonies in the chorus were pretty good.
All in all, I regard that fact that Morissette tried to make ironies, but she ultimately failed at them. So, good for her for making the attempt, but I wouldn't give her a 100% in the "Use of Irony" department.
As i started reading the lyrics to this song "Ironic",I found one example of irony that stood out too me. "It's meeting the man of my dreams/ And then meeting his beautiful wife." This explains how shes finally find man she's interested in, and thinks she has as shot of getting to know him, her wish is blown away by a woman that has that man already. It seems to be ironic because in life that seems to happen quite frequently, especially in movies. That's what this song is about mostly, showing people how things can be so ironic, but people don't realize it so much.
I think that this song shows some irony. Some of the examples used in the song are actual irony and some are just coincidence. Like when it says "It's like rain on your wedding day." thats just by chance. But, the part about the mans plane crashing would be an example of irony. -kelsey period 7
Alot of things in this song are very ironic. an example is sh e said "Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye He waited his whole damn life to take that flight and as the plane crashed down". To me i think that is so ironic how he had never been on a plane and the one time he does it crashes, that is like 1 to 100. Some parts of the song don't show irony, i mean rain on your wedding day can happen to anyone it is just a misfortune.
The theme of irony is excellently portrayed in the song "Ironic" by Alanis Morissette. However, just because this theme is excellently portrayed throughout the song does not mean it is easy to unearth. One must really splice up and digest the lyrics in order to find the true meaning of the song.
Many critics of this song just look at the obvious, and thus falsely assume statements that song is trying to get across. For example, most readers over-analyze the lyrics "It's a black fly in your Chardonnay." Many think this statement has nothing to do with irony and is therefore irrelevant to the meaning of irony itself; but that is just what Alanis wants one to think. The statement does not contain an ironic message, and that is what makes it ironic.
On the contrary to my previous argument, in numerous points throughout the song Alanis makes a countless number of "mistakes." In these instances, Alanis either mistakes the meaning of irony with something else, or fails to portray irony altogether. I believe this is due to poor songwriting technique (and/or lack of intelligence!). All in all, one can conclude that the song "Ironic" by Alanis Morissette displays many good (and bad) examples of irony.
I found the lyrics to this song to ironically not be very ironic. There was really only one part where I believed Alanis Morissette hit the mark and demonstrated irony accurately:
"Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly/He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye/He waited his whole damn life to take that flight/And as the plane crashed down he thought/'Well isn't this nice..."
This is ironic because as the first link said, the man was afraid of flying all his life and when he got on a plane for the first time it crashed.
Most of the other lines are either unfortunate situations, bad-timing, or mere coincidences. For example, "It's like rain on your wedding day" is just an unfortunate coincidence. A good point in the first link mentioned was when she said "It's meeting the man of my dreams/ And then meeting his beautiful wife." -- the article reads that "we would expect all the good ones to be taken," which I find to be completely true.
This song was ironic in itself considering most of the events talked about are basically just bad luck. Like the other links said, irony is often a misused word that is often tossed around because its real meaning isn't exactly understood.
Haha i agree with Gio's comment on the irony part. This woman can not write good lyrics. Her Irony is weak and cliche, like i haven't heard of the old man dying after winning the lottery (by the way, dont play the lottery; its another way for the state to take your money). However i don't agree with Gio on the about the harmonies. The melody in this song is thumbs down. Its like every other pop song i've heard, a generic catchy wail by the singer. Yeah thats my view of this song, feel free to comment my comment
Yes, Sergei - but what does the state DO with that money? Build roads, fund schools...basically make life livable in CT...
(Well, I'm not entirely sure that schools enter the mix at any point, but I'll guarantee that a portion of the money is set aside for road repairs.)
And on the subject of the song - isn't it ironic that this song is NOT ironic...despite the fact that it's actually called "Ironic?" Perhaps Morrissette has created a song with a meaning that is beyond our comprehension... Or, it's always possible that she needed to scrounge up some lyrics for a quick hit single, and decided to draw inspiration from her old, poorly written high school essay on irony . (It's a plausible scenario - really!)
In the immortal words of David St. Hubbins (of Spinal Tap fame): "It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."
Pssssh roads? in connecticut the stuff we travel on are more like paths. Our highways are like lines at the DMV. And CT isn't really all that livable either. My electric bill is incredibly high, and me and my mom don't even use any electricity (no TV, no dishwasher, not much lighting , small house, etc.), so basically they're charging me 5$ every-time i turn my computer on. The taxes in Ct are through the roof. i mean seriously, i don't run a hedge-fund here. Our 5 main cities are crime ridden pits of scum. bridgeport and waterbury are a joke, and Hartford turns into the drug center of new england after 5 o'clock. New haven is quite nice though (= However, i love the beautiful woods, and the hills in the north. The people are kind and were a blue state, so i live here. all done. And don't forget we get 4 seasons a year. i cant miss the fall foliage.
I'm pretty sure your Mrs. Baker - correct me if im wrong. nice comment (=
Sergei, I hate to disagree with you, but Connecticut is not THAT bad. We are the wealthiest (if not, second wealthiest) state in the entire country. Highway traffic may pose a problem, but that is why they are making a new "Q" bridge. I'll admit that Waterbury and Bridgeport are completely trashed-out, but hey, what cities aren't? I think the only problem we have with CT is that we have a Republican governor...and the ghetto of Pine Orchard.
Your argument is sound, Sergei - Connecticut DOES have unsually high tax rates.
However, if you don't like our tax rates, then I wouldn't suggest living in NYC or Chicago. More urban projects = higher taxes. (But I could be making a sweeping generalization there.)
Just out of curiosity: what other factors can affect tax rates? Are they regulated exclusively by the state? Or does inflation come into play at any point?
Of course, inflation WOULD affect the cost of supplies for public projects, so I suppose the economic situation has an inherent effect on tax rates. Inputs, anyone?
Also, your electric bill is separate from your taxes. Taxes come into play when you earn/gain money, as in a large business transaction (or even winning the lottery). Although the electric company IS part of public works...right? Hm...
I think that either way, you're screwed. If one wishes to move to the city, you'll find higher taxes due to urban development projects (as mentioned in another comment), but if you move to a more rural/suburban area, you might have to pay higher taxes due to public projects. However, taxes pertaining to public projects in Branford are non-existent, because WE GOT NOTHING DONE. I mean come on, look at Walsh for Christ's sake. It has no real walls. The government of CT is just a bunch of cheap-o's.
