  1. Reading is very important due to it's substantial benefits, however due to the recent media overload that is the 21st century, many of the youth prefer the more mind-numbing approach of television or the Internet in an effort to stay up to date with the newest fads. As a child I read quite a bit, but as the years went on I slowly decreased the amount I read and partook in other less educational hobbies like Television or Video Games. I believe this can be said with most of today's youth, but there are still those who read. For as long as there will be books there will be readers.

I agree with what the author is saying in this article. Kids should read more in today's society but they don't. As Bruni said in the article, "... reading does things — to the brain, heart and spirit — that movies, television, video games and the rest of it cannot.". I believe this is true because during the previous years, the ones I have read i felt much more in tune and connected with life than those years i did not read much for leisure.

  3. "Books are personal, passionate. They stir emotions and spark thoughts in a manner all their own, and I’m convinced that the shattered world has less hope for repair if reading becomes an ever smaller part of it." This quote explains when i read the book "The Fault Of Our Stars" when I read the book it showed emotions to me. I bet towards others too. ED

  4. I believe that kids now a days do not read that much as they should anymore. Studies show that reading more helps in everyday activities. In the article it says he always asks his niece's and nephews if they read and they don't really that much anymore.-------BLACK FALCON

  5. Reading this shows that not many kids or teens now a day read for fun.“reading and intelligence have a relationship so close as to be symbiotic.” By reading more you can learn more but in way told by a story. You can also take what you learned and imply it in your schooling. This shows that reading will help you with school and later in the world.

  6. In this article Frank Bruni argues that reading is very important and people nowadays don't read enough. He says that reading could possibly cause or relate to somebody being smarter. Bruni says, "In terms of smarts and success, is reading causative or merely correlated?"(Read, Kids, Read) I believe that it is possible that if somebody reads more that they could possibly be smarter, but I don't believe that just because you read you will be smarter. Also, just because somebody doesn't read that doesn't mean that they won't be as smart. I think that how much a kid reads should be left up to them because if somebody is forced to read than it won't help them at all because they will not actually pay attention to what they are reading. Reading may be helpful for some people to become smarter but I don't believe that reading is the cause for somebody to smarter.

  7. I agree with Bruni. Reading is a personal thing. People have their own preferences. I feel like the books schools choose for students aren't what they want to read and that's partially why students don't want to read. I like to read and i think its important to your level of intellect. You learn valuable vocabulary from reading. "Books are personal, passionate. They stir emotions and spark thoughts in a manner all their own, and I’m convinced that the shattered world has less hope for repair if reading becomes an ever smaller part of it."

I agree with Bruni in the idea that reading can be a very beneficial as well as pleasurable activity. However i disagree with his idea that books are inherently superior in their deliverance of a connection or idea." And they rightly noted that the intensity of the connection that a person feels to a favorite novel, with which he or she spends eight or 10 or 20 hours, is unlike any response to a movie." Books and movies are both art, and it is the artist who gives the art it's unique charm or deep meaning. And there are many movies and other forms of media that can prove to be just as if not more intense than some books. In Ridley Scott's Alien he creates an entire world through use of lighting and a huge array of sound effects to deliver this deep sense of dread that i could not find anywhere else.

  9. I think we should start getting kids to read more because it will help them learn more as they get older. Frank Bruni also ask his nephews and nieces what they're and why they're not reading more. He would keep giving them novels to read to encourage them to read more.

  10. I agree with what the author, Frank Bruni, said how he believes that kids nowadays should read more. A scientific study showed that,"... "reading and intelligence have a relationship so close as to be symbiotic." This clearly shows that reading can help to improve a persons intelligence in most cases. Kids nowadays don't read as much anymore because now we have more fun and interesting things to do so we don't want to read although it can be helpful.
