  10. I thought that Dennis' story was amazing. The most interesting part to me was the story about Malcom and the fact that the man whose life he was trying to save actually ended up killing not only himself, but Malcom too. I was wondering what, if any, beliefs in God Dennis had, and whether going to war changed those beliefs. Thanks for coming to talk to us!

  11. I thought the presentation by Dennis Mannion yesterday was, hands down, the most interesting and captivating presentaion that I've seen here at BHS. He didn't claim to be anything he wasn't, but instead was honest with us and wasn't afraid to speak his mind. The story he told was quite an eye-opening experience for me and i storngly believe that next years class will thouroughly enjoy his work as well.

  12. I really enjoyed this presentation. you really had my full attention the whole time i was there and actually i wanted to stay longer. I loved all the pictures and stories you had to show and tell us. I know that myself and many if not everyone else in that auditorium learned a lot more about the war and its affects on people and nature.

  13. I thought Dennis' presentation was so interesting! I loved how he had so many pictures that showed how fast his physical appearence changed over the course of a couple years. In general, I think it is awesome that we got to hear from a veteran of the Vietnam War because we are not always going to have the opportunity to hear from primary sources.

    Thanks for coming, Dennis!

  14. His presentation was awesome. He did a really great job telling his story and connecting with us, his audience. I think he made us all feel and laugh and think about something new that day.

All and all, a very interesting presentation.

I want to ask if he encountered any problems back in the states.

  15. I thought it was very humble of him not to say, "I'm doing this to convince you of something, but to show you what happened to me." Also, the way he told the Gods-honest truth, even when it was ugly and harsh was very brave. People often try to make themselves seem better by lying, and I commend him for not doing this.

  16. I thought that Dennis' presentation was extremely informative and interesting. I liked how he used pictures to tell his story. They made me feel as if I was experiencing his stories with him. I also enjoyed seeing the change in Dennis throughout his life. It is admirable that he joined the war after failing out of college. Most people would give up.

  17. I feel that Dennis Mannion's story was very inspirational and admirable. Although he said most of his survival was the result of pure luck, in my opinion, it takes a very strong man to survive in war in the way that he did. This was my second year seeing the presentation and although I heard the same story twice, I was no where near bored for any of it. The pictures and stories were excellent and I was continuously interested throughout the presentation!

  18. I really really enjoyed listening to Mr. Dennis. When he said, "I'm not here to entertain you," I really thought the whole presentation was going to be boring. But it most definitely was NOT! It was the only presentation in which I could actually somewhat imagine what it looked and felt like in a different place. The pictures were amazing, he tossed in some humor, and the stories he had to tell were incredible. I'd venture to say that he told the best stories I've ever heard. Honestly, I won't be forgetting this presentation any time soon.

  19. Dennis Mannion was definitely great at public speaking! What he had to talk about was really intriguing and the way he presented kept me interested the entire time. He makes us thankful for the lives that we live today, thankful for the fact that we are not in Vietnam

  20. I really appreciated what Dennis had shared with us and how much of a great point of view he has. His pictures and his life story showed how much of an impact the war had on him and took us inside the war. We were such a good audience because it was so interesting and it took us in.

  21. I thought the presentation was really good. It was interesting to hear about the war and to see all of the pictures. I also went to this presentation last year so I was worried that I was going to be listening to the same thing again. However, Dennis Mannion's presentation was different this year. I learned to things about him and his experience that I did not learn last year.
Question for Dennis: You talked about your friends who unfortunately passed during the war, how many of your friends survived with you?

  22. I really enjoyed Dennis Mannion's presentation! He is a very personable man and he is tough. I find it extremely enteraining listening to stories told from a tough person who has a great sense of humor like Dennis. He made not so happy tales funny and really illustrated how the war effected and changed people. I've been telling people the story about his towel as well as others ever since he spoke to us! Also, all the older kids that I talked to remembered listening to him from pior years!

  24. In the past, I have heard many different presentations about the Vietnam War. But I would have to say that the one Dennis presented to us was the best. He was not afraid to speak the exact truths of each event and allowed us to feel how he felt during each affair. My favorite part was how he explained his “rookie” mistakes into the Marines and told how life was in the war. I wish he had more time to tell more personal stories but the time was still appreciated.

  25. After listening to Dennis Mannion's presentation for a second time (last year my class went,) I found that I got more out of it. Last year he was just as inspiring and interesting but like anything hearing it for a second time opens up new meanings for you. He is a very accomplished man who kept pursuing his life although he struggled. He kept faith alive his whole time in Vietnam which can be very difficult for one. He also made me realize how important school actually is that even after failing years later after serving our country he made a point to attend college to get an education. Mr.Mannion really inspired me and obviously my classmates to always fight through life.

  26. I found Dennis's story to be very inspiring in the sense he was so honest about his time serving in Vietnam. He may not think of himself as a hero, but his honesty and the fact he was gracious enough to come talk to us about his experiences, are what makes him a hero in my opinion. I also appreciate the fact he told it like it was and not just how a history textbook says it is. Textbooks give you statistics and facts, but Dennis gave the point of view of a survivor and real person.

  28. I really loved how real the presentation was. Mr. Mannion was not pretending to be something or someone he wasn’t. He really related to us as students and he was not ashamed to say he went into the marines for selfish reasons. It was interesting to get another perspective other than the usual sugar coated presentations we get sometime. Overall, this presentation was very interesting and thought provoking.

  29. When I first heard we were going to a lecture yesterday I figured, "Ah, just another boring lecture, oh boy", but as soon as I got there and saw Dennis standing in the front I thought "This guy means business". I was so surprised by his speech and I felt so thankful I got the opportunity to hear some real experiences from the war, because we're all read about wars and armies, but none of us have ever heard real stories and saw real personal pictures from someone. I really enjoyed listening to his presentation.

  30. I really liked down to earth he was. It seemed to me that he wasn't trying to preach but just giving out the facts of his time in Vietnam. I thought his lecture/speech was very interesting and he did a good job of keeping the audience's attention.

  31. I thought that the presentation was very informative, and i learned a lot more about war. I also liked how he showed everyone pictures, because it really gave you a sense about how it must have been there, fighting in Vietnam. I thought the Dennis Mannion was a great speaker and I'd like to listen to him tell his story again in the future.

  32. I really enjoyed Dennis' speech yesterday and although he doesn't think that he's brave, he really is brave and lucky that he survived in such a harse environment. So many people don't have the courage to do what he did and made his way through it without giving up. All of the pictures and stories really put the concept of war into perspective for me and it made me respect soldiers everywhere so much more.

  34. I found the presentation from Dennis extremely interesting. I found his personal stories and experiences captivating and eye opening. I learned that war is not a glorious and heroic thing, but on the contrary it is a horrible and tragic thing. I think the fact that Dennis surivived is inspirational and a miracle. I think that of all his chances he was extremely lucky to survive and I'm sure that he has not taken his second chances for granted one bit.

  35. Mr. Mannion, Your story is very eye opening. This is the second time I've seen you, and it's deifferent both times. I know and understand that you say you aren't noble and things like that, but I feel that every soldier is, no matter what his/her circumstances. You should be respected, because even though you feel you might not have done much, every little thing/person counts. I know you still live with many troubles from the war, maybe PTSD, I have it as well, but you lived farther than the war, and you made something of your life, and you are now sharing your story. I think thats something that should make you very noble.

  36. I really enjoyed the presentation yesterday. It was neat to hear about a soldier's experience from some one who was actually there.e The best thing about it was definitily how candidly he told his story, which gave the story a sense of realness and relatability.

  37. I take public speaking and now everytime somoeone public speaks I always pay attention to how well they delivered their speech. I think that Mr. Mannion did an excellent job. He knew his audiance, meaning that he knew that he was talking to teenagers and had a very relaxed approach to him, and he didn't make it complicated, and he also spoke with confidence and his personality was really expressed. I also liked his story.

  38. I really liked his presentation. I thought it was really cool how in depth his story was. It was super interesting to be told his story from a first person point of view. I was kind of astonished at the way he calmly told us how his friend was blown up right in front of him. I was sad to see how war could change a person so much. I've heard of how war changes a person but I've never seen it first hand.

  40. i thought that the presentation was FANTASIC! It was the stright out truth, nothing of honor, or anything like that, it was just about a regular guy, with a pocket full of luck in a uneasy war. it was great i was honored to have seen him.

  42. I thought that his stories were interesting. I think that the story about that guy that they thought was dying which came back to life and blew up another guy. I think that was dumb because the vietkong guy should have just left them alone because they could have just killed him. I also think it sucks that he had diarea on the trip because that must not be pleseant.

  44. I thought that the presentation was very interesting, it really showed how much the war can change someone. The three pictures he showed at the end really pushed that part home because it showed how he went from being a carefree high school and college student to being a truely different person because of his service. It also caused a friend of mine to reconsider joining the military because before the presentation he had no idea what he could be getting himself into.

  45. I loved the presentation that he did. I liked how honest and open he was about things that happened and the experiences that he had. That really was a huge dog. I honestly didn't realized how war changed people until he told us. Seeing that towel that he held up with all of the holes in it really made me realize how much danger the troops were in.

  46. Finally, an interesting presentation at BHS, i never thought I would see it. Mr Mannion's presentation was great and I really enjoyed listening to all the storys and seeing the pictures. 47. My question is how hard was it then to get into college. Notre Dame is a very hard college now to get accepted into. I know UConn is probably easier to get into for students like myself but getting accepted into Notre Dame is a very big deal. I have a lot of respect for the fact that Dennis attended Notre Dame. I have a lot of respect for Dennis too based on the fact that he served for our country in the war. I really do admire and can relate myself to Dennis, like myself he played football at NDWH.

  49. I don't like war stories a lot, the ones I have heard usually follow one of a few common themes. The one you told us was completely different. It was the most interesting I've ever heard. I'm still not completely sure why, but it is one of few that I took something out of. Thanks for coming and talking to us, it was a great alternative to 5th and 4th periods, and I actually like those classes.

  50. i loved the presentation, i give him a lot of credit for standing in front of a crowd and sharing his experience with us. I think it takes a lot from someone who went trough everything he went trough and still have the strength to share it with others. I was amazed by the story he told us about him and his friend almost loosing his life when a bomb exploded right next to them. I’m really glad that he survived this experience and he was able to share it with all of us. is nice to hear the real story and see actual pictures from someone who really went there and truly knows the experience. thank you Denis for sharing your story with us, i think a lot of the students that we're there and listened to you can look up to you. And you said that you were no hero you just got lucky, well i think you are a hero and you had a lot of courage to go to war and then sharing the experience with others. thank you and it was a pleasure to have you in our school :)

  51. Dennis's presentation was very real and made me feel lucky not to have been a soilder in Vietnam because you are fighting for your life everyday. You are constantly making choices that could easily end your life and those around you if you are wrong. It's amazing how Dennis could go through that and still be as cheerful and willing to talk about his story.

  53. I liked his whole presentation. It helped how he had pictures so you could get more of a feel for how things were. I thought the before and after pictures had the biggest impact on me because you go into war not knowing what to expect, then when you've been there for a few months your whole vibe for things is completely different.
