In my opinion, I believe that "The Atlantic" is that it was Hughes own fault on why he got injured. I know, when you're a kid you just want to fool around, but you have to be careful. You can't be shoving bottled rockets up your own butt...that's a little crazy! In my mind, Hughes was probably high on marijuana, or drunk, or maybe both at the same time! I mean, who would think of doing this when he's in a sober state of mind. In the article, it got me when it said, "to be an excellent idea: he would shove a bottle rocket up his ass and blast it into the sweet night air. And perhaps it was an excellent idea. What was not an excellent idea, however, was to misjudge the relative tightness of a 20-year-old sphincter and the propulsive reliability of a 20-cent bottle rocket. What followed ignition was not the bright report of a successful blastoff, but the muffled thud of fire in the hole." To me, no offense, but you have to basically have something seriously wrong with you. In my opinion, I believe that college fraternities should be kept an eye on. I've heard many stories about college fraternities, and about the many, crazy, stupid stories that people do, and it doesn't make sense, because they're hurting themselves!! Not even other people, THEMSELVES. Are you crazy? Do you belong to planet earth? What the heck!! But, on a more serious note, I think that people shouldn't ban fraternities just because someone makes a stupid, idiotic mistake. However, they should make more of an effort to make sure that kids don't do something completely stupid. I get it, i'm a kid too..you want to "YOLO", but you can't YOLO in heaven when you kill yourself for shoving a bottled rocket up your butt..

  2. I believe that fraternities should be permitted by colleges and universities because they serve a good purpose and don't really have many downsides. Fraternities are smart because it helps students form bonds and brotherhoods. Everyone thinks that fraternities are just about party groups that hangout and just get smashed together. While that be true in some cases, many fraternities serve purposes related to academic and financial success. These people study together, work together, complete everyday tasks together so they can ensure they're success. Fraternities bring a lot of fun and comfort into a lot of college students lives by letting them interact with their classmates and make a lot friends. I think it would be completely unfair to ban fraternities from colleges and universities.

  3. "The Dark Power of Fraternities" does exist. On the outside frats are dark, dumb, and seemingly futile for education purposes. They may support everything your parents told you not to do but in the end they build these young men in to responsible people with lifelong goals. Everyone is there to support each other and if one man wants to do something dumb, hopefully he will learn from his mistakes. "Personal-injury lawsuits bring the hated media attention and potential financial losses that motivate fraternities to improve" So in a sense people improve their lives based on mistakes, same thing with fraternities.

  4. I do believe fraternities are bad. Before reading this article, I heard about how brutal the hazing rituals could be. However, this article explains that many may injuries come from fraternities, and most of them are caused by battery, sexual assault, and believe it or not, falling from sleeping porches. These societies are dangerous. Why aren't they being stopped? They've become powerful. The article states, " ...in may substantive ways, fraternities are now mightier than the colleges and universities that host them. That's pretty scary, considering the size of some of these colleges. And it's even worse that they can't be stopped. With the ragers being thrown, and students being reckless, these situations have become fatal. One girl fell from a 25 foot high sleeping porch and had traumatic injuries. There were a few pros I'd like to mention too. The article also mentioned how the frats would keep alumni involved with the school, which is important to many universities. Also, with the housing being able to fit many students inside, it allows the college to make more money. Even though these societies can be beneficial, they do more harm than good. Another example in the article was when a mother was trying to get her lazy son to fill out a college application. He didn't even show the slightest interest in college until his mom brought him on campus and he saw a fraternity house. He knew that "kids are getting laid here; kids are having fun" and suddenly he thought twice about filling out a college application. But that's the problem. Kids are going to school for the wrong reason. Fraternities may give you life long memories but they are dangerous and people need to realize that.

  5. Fraternities and sororities have been a part of colleges all across the nation for many decades. Although fraternities and sororities often lead to negative experiences for many, they would be nearly impossible to be rid of. The amount of members of fraternities and sororities is astonishing. According to Caitlin Flanagan, Author of "The Dark Power of Fraternities", "Today, one in eight American students at four-year colleges lives in a Greek house, and a conservative estimate of the collective value of these houses across the country is $3 billion." With a presence in college life so large, fraternities and sororities should definitely stay around. After all, not all are bad, many complete acts of community service and the like.

  6. I believe that fraternities and sororities are a necessary evil. Although most frats spend a lot of time partying and making choices that are not the smartest, they help colleges. Students living in Greek houses has allowed collages to start exepting more people. "Today, one in eight American students at four-year colleges lives in a Greek house, and a conservative estimate of the collective value of these houses across the country is $3 billion." Not only does this allow more people to get into some schools, but these frats are so big that it would be nearly impossible to get ride of them.

  7. I do believe that frats and sororities are a bad idea. The students are always partying and that could furthermore lead to them getting into major trouble with the cops and people around them. In the text it mentioned, "Far from being freakish and unpredictable events, fatal and near-fatal falls from fraternity-house roofs, balconies, windows, and sleeping porches are fairly regular occurrences across the country." College is supposed to be a time of fun and making memories, however there is a limit as to when it could start to get dangerous.

  8. I believe that fraternities anr sororities should be allowed on camuses because they deliver experiences filled with life lessons even though some freak accidents occur as well. In the article it said, "Across the country, kids fall—disastrously—from the upper heights of fraternity houses with some regularity. They tumble from the open windows they are trying to urinate out of, slip off roofs, lose their grasp on drainpipes, misjudge the width of fire-escape landings..." Theses accidents are rare occasions and they are usually the result of someone doing something stupid. Frats and sororities give students a different experience that they won't experience with just being a part of the college or university. These houses deliver many memories and if they are taken away it will almsot act as a punishment and it would take away many good experiences for America's students.

  9. I think they should be allowed because they can give you scholarships and they also allow students to have housing on campuses. Yes, some sororities and fraternities are out there when it comes to try and getting into them; I have heard that they make incoming students do some outrageous things to get in to the club. but others are more simple and funny things to do to get into the club.
These clubs allows students to do some crazy things that not a normal college student would do and they allow that student to have fun with people who have the same interest that they have. "Far from being freakish and unpredictable events, fatal and near-fatal falls from fraternity-house roofs, balconies, windows, and sleeping porches are fairly regular occurrences across the country." Well, you can see that at other parties across the country and not JUST in these sororities; its gonna happen they can't stop it. It's just gonna be fun for whoever gets to sleep on someone's roof after partying the entire night away.

  10. I believe that fraternities and sororities is bad , because they spend a lot of time to party and that lead to getting in problems , " Today, one in eight American students at four-year colleges lives in a Greek house, and a conservative estimate of the collective value of these houses across the country is $3 billion " it’s pressing to be in collage life so large , it’s help for memories and it’s lead them in trouble “But it’s impossible to examine particular types of campus calamity and not find that a large number of them cluster at fraternity houses”

  11. I think that sororities and fraternities are a bad idea. They won't be easy to get rid of because they've been around for so long but they only seem to cause problems and some people have to do ridiculous things to get to be in one and that's not fair. "From the very beginning, fraternities were loathed by the grown-ups running colleges, who tried to banish them." Since grown ups running colleges tried to stop fraternities and sororities they obviously aren't a positive things and cause problems for the college and might impact the colleges reputation in a negative way.

  12. Although fraternities and sororities are made to help give students new experiences, they have led to many accidents. In the text it states, "Across the country, kids fall—disastrously—from the upper heights of fraternity houses with some regularity. They tumble from the open windows they are trying to urinate out of, slip off roofs, lose their grasp on drainpipes, misjudge the width of fire-escape landings..." These are just examples of how sororities and fraternities can lead to bad experiences and can risk the lives of students. Therefore, I believe that fraternities and sororities are not a good idea.

  13. I believe that fraternities and sororities have some positives and some negatives. Fraternities and sororities would be almost impossible to get rid of because they are well known due to how long they've been going on for. In college, people will make decisions and if they're willing to take risks and get caught, then those people will learn their lessons. The amount of bad experiences that happen should not be accepted but when kids go to college, majority of them look forward to the events that can happen due to freedom and being independent. If fraternities and sororities do what they need and want to do, they should do it in a mature manner. "Are fraternities acting in an ethical manner, requiring good behavior and punishing poor decisions? Or are they keeping a cool distance from the mayhem, knowing full well that it occurs with regularity?" Said in "The Dark Power of Fraternities" written by Caitlin Flannagan. What Caitlin said should be taken into consideration by colleges and Fraternities.

  14. Fraternities are one of those things that have been around forever. They aren't going anywhere. What needs to happen is they need to allow them, but have stricter regulations. The fraternities need to meet certain requirements. The only hope colleges would have would be to make fraternities a group that people can look up to, not something parents have to worry about they're children joining. Something that the members can be proud to put on they're resumes.
