  1. Taking place during the Harlem Renaissance the speaker, possibly Langston, is writing about freedom. Thee first lines explain a dream that can not be fulfilled until the white day is done. White Day maybe the white man keeping the blacks in slavery adn keeping them from freedom. As it continues, "Dark like me" could describe the speaker and the way they are different from the rest of the world. It continues to explain this dream and what needs to be done to be free of the white man.

  2. I agree with Ryan and how the speaker could be speaking about freedom. Saying that he might only get freedom when the white sun goes down and the dark sky comes signaling night. I think the speaker is also saying that the day is too quick to enjoy, but the night comes in gently and you are allowed to rest and breathe and dream.

  3. Like Sarah and Ryan, I agree how the poem is about freedom. Stacy mentioned in class how she thinks that he is waiting for the day equality comes for the African Americans. Ultimately, this poem seemed to have a good attitude and was positive, unlike some of the other poems we've been reading lately. When the narrator is talking about dancing and whirling, it becomes clear how excited he is for something good to finally come.

  4. I agree with all the previous comments made about this poem. I think that it is about how Langston Hughes is waiting for his day to be free and can do whatever he wants. I think that just the thought of getting to dace around without getting stared at or just spending the day in a park doing whatever he wants is a dream he wants. You notice that this is about African Americans and their struggles because he mentions that the night is getting dark like himself. I really enjoyed this poem and I think that it has a very good message.

  5. My interpretation of this poem is that Langston wants to be free from black oppression. He wants blacks and whites to be treated equally, which is implied when he talks about how he dreams of dancing during the day. Langston doesn't feel that he's accepted during the daytime because of the color of his skin, but when it becomes night and he blends in with everyone else he feels accepted. I agree with the previous comments that this poem is definitely talking about Langston's dream of freedom.

  6. I thought the poem was about acceptance. He kept saying that the night is getting dark like himself, which I felt was addressing the racism of the time period. I found the poem to be positive and lighthearted but it had a strong message. I agree with Stacy's and Julianne's interpretation of the dancing and whirling around. It was a poem looking into the future with hope. Much better and contrasting to emily dickenson's poetry.

  7. This poem is about Langston expresing his dreams about being a free man. He says that he wants to whirl and dance until the white day is done, which i think is signifact because he wants there to be a day where all men are treated equal. That's why he feels more comfortable during the night, because it's dark like him.
