I feel that gene making finny fall was a conscience decision and i base this on two things and that was that to jounce a limb as was described in the book you would need to bend your knees in a certain way that you would not do unless you had the intent of trying to make someone lose their balance or shake the limb. The second reason is that Gene is extremely jealous and almost wishes he could be Finny. A perfect example from the book would be when Gene puts on Finny's clothes and goes to dinner wearing them, me having a lot in common with Gene and Finny age wise, I highly doubt i would do anything like this unless it was to get the spirits and hopes up of the others on campus. To me it seems that Gene really regrets what he did just because he keeps talking about it and trying to block it out, by his attempts of blocking it out he must feel really guilty which is a sign that he did this to Finny purposely. Also i see Finny's reaction to Gene's confetion a real sign of friendship. I believe this because he keeps on telling Gene that he really didn't have the intent to knock him of the limb it was just an accident and that since they were friends he didn't actually do this. But i feel that when theris the long pause it is a sign that Finny is accepting and looking back on what happened. I feel that he has come to the realiztion that Gene may really have been jealouse enough to do this.
gene made finny fall on purpose whether gene knew it himself or not. gene was always jealous of finny and wants to be finny, thats why he put finny's clothes on after the fall. if he hadn't done it on purpose then gene would have tried to save finny instead of standing ther watching finny fall. gene feels bad about this and he should since it is his falt. he feels realy guilty. doug period 5
I think Gene meant to shake the tree. He is really jelous of Finny. I think Gene is really insecure and to have him fall while everyone was watching would make him look better in front of the guys. But afterwards, that he really is hurt, Gene feels bad because everyone loves Finny and if they know he purposly made him fall, he could get in big trouble and have everyone hate him. Why else would Gene come back to Devon after all these years reflecting on how hard of a time it was for him, he walked out to the tree in tthe rain, he had to see it and face his past because he did do it on purpose. He was wrong not to trust Finny as a true friend. Gene wants to be Finny thats why he put his clothes on and is his "best friend" he wants everyone to think hes cool like Finny, but the difference is, Finny doesn't try and is sincere. I agree with luka, when the book describes him bending his knees and joucing the limb, it was on purpose or else you wouldn't be able to move it enough to make him fall. Right before this happened, Gene didn't want to go, they had an argument about Gene needing to study. Gene was probaby so fed up and pressured he just wanted him to fall and look bad, I don't think Gene wanted him to never walk again, I think he wanted him to be humiliated.

I think gene made finny fall because if gene wasnt jelous or liked finny then he woul have atleast attemteted to try and save him.
